Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

My son went to the Big Green bookshop to buy the next book in a series he is keenly reading this summer, but did not have enough money on him. I told him to ask if I could pay by phone/credit card, or drop the money off later, but they kindly let him off the £1 - he was so impressed he has vowed to buy all his books there in future.

It's service like that you wouldn't get from big chains or, for that matter, Amazon (pet hate!).

Yes. They are incredibly friendly and helpful, aren't they? And have worked hard to build a loyal customer base and to widen their activities way beyond what the large chains used to offer.

There are loads of activities going on - something for everyone. See the website!

Knowing them it's great to have a little chat when I go in. They'll speedily get books I need. And have helped me locate second-hand books. They ran book launches for friends and colleagues of ours.

In all this, it's interesting that the BGB seem to be following a pattern which has proved successful in other cities - including in the U.S.  See this article in the Christian Science Monitor about flourishing independent bookstores.
