Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
HOL and diversity.
I know that in theory HoL is 'open to all' but I wonder whether a survey of our. members has been done? This area is after all v ethnically mixed and I don't see that reflected much here. If not what can we do to bring in local groups or individuals so they are also part of our online community?

Have added the "?", ta John. How would we write the French translation in unisex : )
Hugh, don't really want to put a map on it as it is an awkward shape and there aint no room. I have added "An independent online network to connect and inform people in the neighbourhood of Harringay" and maybe we should put "(not the borough of Haringey).
“For the people by the people|” sounds a bit Wolfie Smith : )

Sounds good. (I hadn't meant to use the words for the people by the people, rather the sentiment :o)). I worry that using a negative qualifier sounds sniffy and given that we're targeting ESL-folk, we probably ought to minimise text, but up to you.

I think leave it as it is in the principle that for sensible mankind the masculine includes the feminine :-)

Is that 'sensible male MANkind' John? A bit dated that statement. I cannot read papers books which just have he his him. I feel excluded I switch off stop reading.

No - the point is " Mankind " is gender-free, like manhole.
However, I'm quite happy to amend my post to read " for sensible womenkind the masculine includes the feminine " - in fact that's more apposite to what I'm saying :-) -

For some reason there is no reply button in your box John. How can you say that MANkind is gender free ? This seems an extraordinary challenge in a 'diversity' discussion? The point is that (most) women do not feel included in generic male terminology. Here's an(ironic) poem I wrote to illustrate the point John:
Lets hear it for the masculine pronoun
When reading literary articles of any kind
don’t forget, oh women,
to translate in your mind
he, his, him
and all words of this kind
To she, her, hers
and then you’ll find,
that masculine pronouns
(and this will be underlined)
can clearly be understood
by all combined,
to cover gender universally,
in a way that’s single-minded,
and simplifies the writer’s job,
leaving behind
unnecessary misunderstanding
of the kind
that leads to confusion
in everyone’s minds.
Don’t dismiss, oh women, those words
that feminists whined
were about superior gender,
they’re nothing of the kind,
but merely about traditional forms
that have for centuries been pre-determined….
