Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Can anyone help me please with this as I have limited IT/PC knowledge and have no idea where to go with this one.

Last night I found I was unable to load certain websites (Channel 5 and its programmes, Wikipedia).

Same this morning. Message is Internet Explorer cannot load this. I have diagnosis and there are no connection problems.

There appears to be no problem – except there is.

Most websites load ok – just a few that won’t.

I do not think this is a problem with the websites – I think it must be with Internet Explorer or Yahoo.

So I have tried to identify what is causing the problem. I use Internet Explorer as a browser so tried MS - except once in MS it won't load its own pages on this!

My broadband is provided by BT Yahoo. so what is causing to problem - BT / Yahoo / MS?

Is it safe to try another browser? if so how (and which) do I do that.

I have checked that the date on my PC is correct so that certificates have not expired.

Is there a known problem that I am unaware of?

Is it something simple I can resolve myself?

Or is it more serious?

If I use a different browser can I then go back to IE?

Any help gratefully received

OK, so it's a bit of an old IT cliche, but have you turned your PC off and on again?  Sometimes this will reset stuff.

Do you have any toolbars installed that could be interfering with the page load ?

Can you press shift-F5 on the page to see if forcing a refresh helps.

Other good browsers are google chrome (http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en-GB/landing_tv.html) and firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/).  I prefer Chrome but both are really good. You can try these out and always go back to IE if you dont like them.

Also, more recent versions of Internet Explorer have something called "Page compatibility Mode. Do you have a little icon on the right of the box where you type the web address that looks like a page cut in two with a zig-zag line ? If so, does clicking on it fix the problem?

Hope you get it working soon - Nigel.

Have just used your link Nigel and loaded Chrome as default browser. and guess what - it won't load same websites (channel 5 and wikipedia) that IE won't! so i am none teh wiser as to what root cause is. will persevere and report back any progress.

I agree with Nigel - both Firefox and Chrome are worth trying. Even if it doesn't fix the problem, it will provide more evidence about what is going on.

thanks Nigel and Alistair - in meantime i have emailed BT help - waiting a reply - and downloaded IE8.

still not working but will try your suggestions and see what happens.

It may be a BTinternet problem. I found it was very very slow to access certain sites this morning.

On the other hand, I just tried wikipaedia and Channel5 and they both load>

My virgin telephone is dead this morning. Also websites that normally load instantly are taking ages to load like facebook. HOL is not affected for me.

I had a very slow day with the internet yesterday (Virgin) but seems to be working fine today.

I loaded Chrome. It also wouldn't load 5 or Wikipedia (plus my bank website temporarily).

son have returned to IE8.

will keep trying - very annoying and seems so random.

It is also very slow at loading any website today.

How eird - just tried again and both are now loading no problem.

thanks for suggested remedies - you can always rely on HoL members

Yes it is safe to use another browser and you can return to IE at anytime (you can even have 2 or more browsers open at the same time). IE has a reputation for bad security so you may be better off with Firefox. When you open firefox you can import all your bookmarks as well so you may decide never to use IE again.

Good luck

It sorted itself out after i returned to IE. i now think it was BT (my broadband provider) as it was generaly slow for ages. thanks for advice about alternative browsers
