Does anyone know why there is a helicopter hovering around tonight or is this a normal occurrence?

Yes this is a regular occurrence. It happened again last night. At c. 12.20am the helicopter flew in from the east, circled round the Ladder/Green Lanes for about twenty minutes and then flew back east. Why, who knows? I have a theory that they use the Ladder / Green Lanes as an area to circle over whilst waiting for further instructions. The Ladder at night is a very recognisable feature from the air, so it would provide a good landmark.
The police helicopters come from High Beach in the east. I can see the direction they take from my living room.
Regarding railway survey helicopters, why would they do this in the middle of the night? No, it's police helicopters - with nothing better to do!
I asked a cop about why police cars come screaming by with lights flashing then when you get around the corner the same police car is filling up at a petrol station. She said that they might have been alerted to an extreme situation and after putting on the lights/sirens had a message ALMOST IMMEDIATELY to stand down as there were enough officers at the scene so they switch off the lights/sirens and continue cruising. I think it's the same with the helicopters. Hope this helps.
"I guess you're joking about the Police helicopter" What's to joke about when at 12.20am (20 minutes past midnight) one gets woken up by a helicopter going round and round. Even worse when they come round at 3am as happened a couple of months ago.
"Met Police use Eurocopter EC145s what had been flying over is a Eurocopter AS33" if you are saying it's not the police then who is it that is flying around in the middle of the night and to what purpose? How come you know what type of helicopter is flying around in the dark? You write "The one I saw had a large camera mounted on the front." - how did you manage to see this in the dark?
The helicopters come from the east (High Beach / Epping Forest - police helicopter base) and head back that way.
And I suppose that the helicopters are measuring heat loss in the middle of the night? If so how come we residents never hear / read about these surveys?
Konrad, I guess that criminals don't keep the same hours as honest citizens.
The police are not joy-riding. They are working to protect you and me.
If they are all based at Elstree how come that the National Police Air Service London Region (NPAS) shows the base as being at Lippitts Hill i.e. High Beach /Epping Forest see :-
http://www.npas.police.uk/bases/london-region
At the foot of the page "Lippitts Hill"
A move to Elstree was proposed last year but it doesn't look as if it has happened yet and I can't find any Google search results with an NPAS base at Elstree. With your knowledge perhaps you could enlighten me.
Plus, where are the answers to the other questions asked? ""Met Police use Eurocopter EC145s what had been flying over is a Eurocopter AS33" if you are saying it's not the police then who is it that is flying around in the middle of the night and to what purpose?
