Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Have you had a cold call about a minor traffic accident?
I got a call - on a very bad line - from someone who wanted to speak to me about a "minor traffic accident". When I said I hadn't had a traffic accident and didn't own a car, he cut the call.
I assume this is another vulture. Anyone else getting these nuisance calls? Any advice?

Unfortunately these are bogus calls, and, like the ones from 'microsoft' do not fall under the auspices of the tps(telephone preference service) as they are not legitimate anyway. I tend to be as rude as can be, but there is no way to stop them.

I have had quite a few. I just pretend that I have indeed had an accident and tell them all about it in great detail. Then I just lay the phone on its side and carry on with what I'm doing.

We get loads too.
Like Louisa,I pass the phone onto our daughter if she is home.
She also goes into great detail re horror accident,no limbs left,no nose,undescribable injuries.How 350 people died and didn't you read about it in the paper.
Then she says you have got through to such and such hospital,Do you want to hear more,then I will put you onto the Police inspector.
By this stage the caller has lost the will to live themselves.
I knew my daughters Psychology university training would one day be useful.
By the end of it the caller has lost the will to live themselves

We get them everyday, though usually during work hours - usually around 4pm. The last two times when I've been in I just go quiet and lay the phone down and walk away for 5-10mins. It works, and hopefully stops them making any more outgoing calls while the line is still open (or so I tell myself). Being polite, rude, telling them we are registered with the TPS and they must never ring again, begging and pleading all have no effect whatsoever.

I must say don't get these nuisance calls, the only ones I get are the charities I'm signed up with calling when they are looking for more money.
I am registered for TPS and always thought this was why I managed to avoid them but reading what others have said about callers ignoring it I suspect that I have avoided these because I am also ex directory...give it a go and see if things improve? Might take a while to see the improvement if you are already on a number of lists but eventually it might do the trick.

We have always been ex directory,but get loads of these types of calls.
Last week got one saying there was a problem with our computer,and they wanted us to make some "amendments"
I asked whom they wanted to speak to,they kept repeating,"the person who uses the computer"a definite scam.
I said" I am putting you through to the Metropolitan police, Do not hang up,"of course then they did

In that case I'll put it down to the luck of the Irish?!
'Please hold the line while you are transferred to the Metropolitan Police Force' LOL if I ever get one of these spammers/cold callers I'm definitely using that!!

Yes I get these calls all the time. I am registered with the TPS and ex-directory but doesn't seem to make much difference. But there are some great tips on here so I will definitely be using some of them in future!

Liz Ixer once made one cry. We are but amateurs.
Another idea posted here once, with the Windows scam one, was to go through the whole thing for hours with the caller, then say when you've had enough, oh I can't do that bit, I don't have a phone. The plan is that they then explode in an existential panic.

I get calls that are for a specific person, usually in some way related to my surname. I tell them that they have got through to 'so and so' prison and that the person they want is an inmate here. They still ask if they can speak to the person! Persistent little buggers they are.

I reckon starting your reply with "have you welcomed Jesus into your life?" might have some entertainment value.
