On the theme "Italians of Harringay" you may enjoy this video "1 second a day - more or less" by Alessandro Mariscalco. It's a 1 year time lapse giving a glimpse into the life of a young Italian living here, and it features quite a few local landmarks (I've spotted Stanhope and Roseberry Gardens, Gokyuzu, Blend, the Sainsbury's, the Overground, the bridge on Green Lanes, as well as Clissold Park and Stamford Hill, but there are probably many more - it goes quite fast!).
I've received it through Italian friends - it has received a bit of media coverage in Italy because at the moment the whole issue of young people leaving in droves to work abroad is very topical. The consulate here estimates about one plane full of new arrivals lands in London every other day, and the number of Italians here has now surged to a quarter of a million (don't tell the Daily Mail....!). I have no figures but based on how frequently I hear Italian spoken here vs other parts of London, I personally think this area must be one of those with the highest concentration of the 20-30 year old segment now.

I have been in the UK for nearly 5 years and I haven't seen/heard so many Italians as in the last 6 months. And there are definitely a lot more Italians around Harringay than in Muswell Hill where I lived for 3 years. It's a sad sign of the times! But glad to know there is a big Italian presence in Harringay, it would be nice to get organised and get to know each other though!
Hi Cecilia, I've been thinking for some time of creating an Italian group on Harringayonline. However I would not want it to turn into a place where people speak only Italian (as we tend to end up doing) and make others feel excluded.
Have noticed this as well Germana. Also the same with many more Spanish & French. But then London is attracting a huge number of young people from all over Europe at the moment. In some respects London is seen as the place to get a job and to enjoy the ever evolving art, café, club & music scene.
I see Jam in a Jar in there - no surprise as this is one place I hear all these languages! Love the video.
Interesting video. Thanks for posting. So, I guess Alessandro is local then?
looks like he might be, unless he moved in the meantime!
Hi! I'm an Italian in Harringay since 2011 and my Italian neighbour has lived here for more than 40 years!
Hi Christian, yes actually a little known fact is that there is also a very high concentration of Italians of an older generation around here - people in their 60s and 70s...who also have very interesting stories to tell. They are somewhat less visible than other communities - perhaps because they don't have their own clubs or shops catering for them. I am not sure whether it's a coincidence or not that so many young Italians seem to be choosing this area too.
Hi Germana, yes that's what my neighbour told me, in the 60s Harringay was a kind of Little Italy :). It's a shame that there are no signs left of all this.
well, looks like it may happen again in the near future if the trend continues! And between the new Borboni, Bianca, Durazzo and (I think I read somewhere) a new Italian on West Green Road we should be better catered for soon. Now, all that's missing is a deli on the high street. We need to persuade Gallo Nero in Stoke Newington to open a branch here, as this is where the action is!
I have to admit that i've never tried Bianca and Durazzo because you know how we italians are, always a bit snob about our food. Would you reccomend it?
Also on Eade road there is one of the biggest importer and distributor in London of italian food and wines, it's called Alivini.
Ha ha Christian, even amongst Italians we have different standards on food and pizza. I am from Milan, and a friend from Rome told me once that I have no idea what a pizza really is (then again a Neapolitan would probably have told her the same thing)....but anyway I like the pizza from Bianca and go there regularly. They need to work a bit on the rest of the menu to be honest (if they want to attract Italians), but for example I tried the the mozzarella in carrozza (although I think they call it something else) and it is nice. Otherwise I normally get a salad with the pizza. They are also very friendly and I happily support them.
I've never been to Durazzo but I will try it. You know, I've been away from Italy 17 years and my standards may have "adapted" a bit - but also I think Italian food here is constantly improving - it's much better than it used to be and I trust this trend will continue!
I had never heard of Alivini, thanks! Will try it.
