Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Harringay former bank featured on Homes Under the Hammer 04/09/09

I'm addicted to this show, so I got very excited when I saw this on catch up this morning:

You're sad :-)

Why do presenters have to wave their hands about ALL the time ?
John (pointing finger)
Presenters need to gesticulate (hands together as in prayer) because the shows content (expansive wide open arms ironic look on face) is so vacuous (fist down on palm). Also, presenters (point over to one side, off screen) have to use baby voices (oh gesture with thumb & forefinger) and little excited squeals (put whole of fist inside mouth) to hold the dumb audiences attention (offer sharp knife to juglar) because their attention span (put .45 magnum to temple) is no longer than an insects (pull trigger).
Oh I see (raised eyebrows)

Somebody should tell them ( loudhailer to mouth) that it's REALLY REALLY annoying and drives the audience back to "The Archers" (hand to ear )
Jez (raises eyes to ceiling)

Remind me not to post something so vacuous in future ;o)
Thanks for posting this Colin. Interesting to see. For me it underlines the influences on our high street. Most owners are probably not local and are driven only by financial gain. They let to other non-locals who have a similar interest in Harringay. It made me think that this probably wasn't the case previously. I think it used to be the case that traders bought the shop and very often lived over it - giving them a very different interest in the area.
I agree with Hugh.

Not of course, that I didn't enjoy the riff on TV presenters penned by Jimmy & Jonnie, two of Hol's talented pool of comedy writers.

But I'd never seen or even heard about the programme. So it was fascinating to watch this aspect of the property business and its implications for our neighbourhoods.

For years I've been under an illusion that people should have decent, affordable homes; as far as possible in attractive mixed neighbourhoods, with buildings blending the best of old and new design.

So thanks BBC for exposing my total naivety; and explaining that it's all about investment and "residential opportunities".
Thanks for posting this Colin, really interesting.

This is about the old bank that was at the bottom of Warham Road - the sale of the whole property from the bank itself to the space above and behind. Is notable that the people who buy it say that they have had "immediate interest" in the retail space - er, that would be from our beloved Metrobet.

Completely agree with Alan - very interesting viewing for anyone interested in accommodation in this area and how the property market works. What I found incredible is that they planned to spend £50k on the rennovations. Given the size of what they've bought I did find that a jaw droppingly low figure.
Just noticed today that the old coach house has a sign on saying "Clarke Properties". Was that the name of the family business that bought it? If so, at least we know where to get hold of someone if there's any problems. I was wondering exactly what they had in mind when they talked about developing the whole site (Shop property + two houses behind it on Warham).
Yes, I noticed this too today, and assumed it was their name.

Still a bit mystified as to what is going on in the main section behind the betting shop - was a college, and still has some signs to that effect, but not sure whether that being converted or not.
You know I had a little chuckle to myself when they mentioned about redeveloping the site. I immediately thought of Harringay online and the fight they would have with people appealing on here, myself included. We really are a force to be reckoned with ;o)
the initial interest was from a 'well known coffee shop' according to the programme. its a shame they (must have) pulled out and left us with metrobet.
