I know this has been discussed before, but not recently, so please share.
I looked into joining Fitness First before as the location is so handy but was put off by many scary tales online about difficulties of cancelling direct debits, debt collectors, surly staff, dirty gyms and worse.
Now my gym, Sequinpark in Highbury, is closing (after 30 years), so I definitely need to find a new one.
So, what is the situation with Harringay Fitness First in 2013? Have things improved? Or got worse?

Fitness first - especially the one in the Arena i would stay away from. My girlfriend signed up , they told her she could freeze her account if she could not attend for any reason. How ever when she came to do this she still had to pay. She was not given terms and conditions , and when finding this online it did state she had to pay. So they used this to persuade her to sign up.
So please if you do sign up, make sure you receive you terms and conditions before you sign any paper. They have been known for not giving terms and conditions and making people sign contracts.
Just make sure what ever they say is on paper before you sign.
Good luck
I'm a Fitness First member, but I usually use one of the gyms in the City and rarely venture to the Harringay one. On the whole it's at the cheaper end of gyms, and the Harringay one is pretty basic.
But the one in the old Arsenal stadium is excellent, and has a pool. So I often use that on the way home. You need to join at "black" level to have the right to use it though.
They do have loads of gyms around London, which is useful too.
I used to be amember of fitness first Crouch end -women only - and loved it, just got too expensive for me. You can cancel DD just need to be clear of how to do it if needs be - you can also have payment breaks for short periods.
My husband tried it and didn't like it much and ended up joining Clissold Leisure Centre Gym in Hackney which I believe is also cheaper.
There's also a very basic gym apparently at the climbing wall.
I've been going to that Fitness First for about a year and have had no problems with it, but I've not tried to cancel my membership or put it on hold, so can't comment on that. It gets busy after 6.30pm in the evenings but before then it's relatively quiet and pretty good on weekends (except for Sat morning!). I find the equipment to be in generally good condition and the locker room is clean and tidy. You can also bring a friend for free on Fridays which is great as my flatmate tags along. The only real complaint I would have is that the room for classes is too small and it gets hella packed sometimes which is really inconvenient for classes such as combat and pump.
