The Harringay Traders Assoc have just launched this website for the
festival on Green Lanes on Sept 20th.

I seem to remember that the festival was NOT meant to be a food festival - the vast majority of residents opting against this when surveyed - so much 4 democracy - there are things that Harringay does sooo much better :(

It's just a name. There are plans for live music too apparently including nights at the Salisbury.
We'll see how it goes. It might be the beginning of something bigger as the years go on, developing into a broader theme.
This year the wishes of some people who got involved earlier in it's planning, seem to have been pushed aside for the needs of the traders to sell more kebabs and baklava!

I was looking forward to things like local history displays. Are we still doing video / photographic record of the day ?

I understand that the local history displays are no longer being organised. Those that were going to do it now feel that the local community has been sidelined by latest developments.
I wonder if the traders are seen as an important part of the Labour vote for next year. ;)

No, it's not just a name Matt. In one sense the name is everything; it will have an influence over the content of the festival, what it says about Harringay to the rest of the world, who's involved and who attends. That's why some people fought so hard to have it changed. In another sense it's nothing because a name is just a name and the stated intent is still to "celebrate diversity, unity and local history" as was agreed at the outset.
For me, it's a shame. A big part of the logic for me was for the festival to be a jointly authored highly collaborative event that all the people of Harringay feel belongs to them. For me, it no longer feels like that. I'm sure that it'll still be a good event nonetheless, if a somewhat different one to what was originally discussed.

The way that discussions happened and that decisions were taken at the Green Lanes Strategy Group were the reason I decided to withdraw my involvement.

It seems odd how the largest and most democratic & represented community group isn't represented here. A true reflection of how the council and TA feel about HOL.

I may be a strange sort of person living in St Ann's ward as I do, so not quite sure if that is Harringay, but I have many foodie friends who will certainly take the opportunity to come to north London from south, west and east, to sample the diverse menus being offered in the local restaurants. They will need to be good though to stand up to fierce competition from other boroughs. According to the festival website there will be a local history walk on the Saturday which is a shame that it couldn't all be coordinated.

Ok bring it on! However there is a lot more to Turkish cuisine than kebabs as my Turkish son - in law who is a chef will confirm. Unfortunately he no longer works in Harringay.
