Harringay cafes act as drop off for school's 'Fill the Shelves' campaign

Heartlands High School are running a ‘Fill the Shelves’ to help stock their new library.

The brand new Heartlands community school opened in Wood Green in September 2010. 

The Library (or Learning Resources Centre or LRC, to give it its proper name) opened with the rest of the main building in Sept 2010.

LRC Manager, Helen Swinyard, told me "Although there was a set-up budget, we are missing the historical spend on stock and equipment which other schools have and so are relying on donations to fully stock the space"

"The pupils are very keen readers but differ hugely in ability and taste and all need to be catered for in order to keep their interest and foster a life-long love of reading"

To help fill the space the LRC is running a ‘Fill the Shelves’ campaign where students, families, staff and local residents are all invited to donate their books and audio CDs for all pupils to have access to.

"We are looking for all types of books, for all tastes and abilities", explained Helen. "We do have donations guidelines on our school website which detail how we treat donations.

"Alternatively, local businesses may prefer to donate a monetary gift for the librarian to buy specific books on a subject related to that business, or donate their products for inclusion in fundraising raffles. Any donations, big or small, are gratefully received."

If you'd like to make a donation, you can drop your books off at the school. If you have just one or two and you can't make it up to Heartlands, I've spoken with a couple of the lcoal cafes and they'll be very happy to act as drop-off points.

So, you can leave books with Kevin at Cafe Moka, at 5 Wightman Road just near Harringay Station (020 8340 8664) or with Cem (pronounced Gem) at Cafe Lemon in Grand Parade, Green Lanes (between Pemberton/Kimberley and Mattison/Chesterfield) (020 8800 2396). If you have more than a couple of books, please check with the cafe first. (We want to leave room for the guests!)
