Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As part of my wish to help shape a better Harringay, as some of you will know, my belief is that we need to imagine what that Harringay should be like and particularly what do we want to be famous for and then put some focus on that. (I'd say what brand would we choose for ourselves, but I'd fear the rain of blows I'd suffer.)

I think part of that picture could reasonably be our local 2.0 profile. Apart from this website, I've met a surprising number of Harringay people who are using or are leaders in some sphere of 2.0, and the Harringay Traders may be just about to add to that.

But, as you may be aware, I'm not the only one with my nose in the 2.0 trough. Government has become increasingly interested and that includes local government.

About a month ago I came across an opportunity from the Department for Communities & Local Government (DCLG) for 10 councils to share in a pot of £1m over two years to accelerate their 2.0 capability. It was a short grant application time scale (10 days in total) and I came across it with just four days left.

I'd previously suggested to Councillor Matt Cooke that there is potential to expand my Harringay 2.0 vision to make Haringey Borough a 2.0 beacon for London. I also floated the idea of Haringey attending a workshop for councils to move them forward on 2.0.

Matt gets 2.0 and its potential for local government (as does Claire Kober) and he was right there on the idea; no dragging, no kicking, no screaming.

So I felt confident to at least get a sympathetic hearing from Matt when I approached him and suggested that Haringey should apply for the funding. Actually, I didn't expect anything would happen, given the short time scale. But I was very impressed when Matt not only took up the idea, he and the Director of Communications, Mike Browne, burned some candles at both ends to get their bid in.

I wasn't invited to contribute to the bid's design, so I'm, not completely clear on what's in it, but my understanding is that it includes a bid for money to run a 2.0 conference for Haringey (How does the Council leverage the opportunities of 2.0), and some limited project piloting, for this year. Next year would see a roll-out of successful pilots.

I'm told that the DCLG will be making an announcement this week. So let's keep our fingers crossed for the boys at Haringey.
