Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Today I've seen someone on a little kart spraying large sections of the pavement whether or not there was any weeds.  More worrying children where walking on the same pavement whilst this was happening.

It also looks like they are spraying the edges of lawns.  I was quite worried when the grass started turning yellow as my toddler has been picking flowers in these same areas.

Glyphosate is a dangerous product and I'm really concerned that it is being sprayed in such large quantities without notifying the people who live in the area and whilst people are passing by.

I've been looking on line to find haringey council's policy on spraying weedkillers but can't find anything on their website.  How to find out about it?

Is anyone else worried about this?

Yes, it is worrying.  Looks like similar concerns have been raised about pavement spraying in Hackney.  I think Haringey weedspraying is contracted out to Veolia as part of the street cleaning contract, but I'm not sure.

According to this webpage "Under the COSHH regulations, before a pesticide is used an employer or self-employed person must carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of the likely risks to health. This will help you to identify the measures that you need to take to protect the health of any person who could be harmed."

"The COSHH assessment will also need to take account of any risks to people who enter treated areas or handle treated materials. This will include, for example:

  • members of the public using treated pavements or using treated land (such as sports turf and parks) for recreational purposes;"

So presumably you could ask for a copy of the COSHH assessment to find out about what they were spraying and what protective measures were supposed to be in place.

Sure but at least he knows what he's spraying or at least I hope he does.  The passers-by get poisoned without knowing it.

Thanks for this Alex.  I'll see if I can get any answers from the council.

I've been campaigning against Roundup (glyphosate) spraying in Haringey, for about 5 years.Frequency has been reduced on Ferry Lane Estate, but still not good enough! It should be banned borough-wide. The thing that baffles me is, central Government knows the harm it causes, but keeps renewing the license. Monsanto, the manufacturer, is an American billionaire company. They carry a lot of clout, and their tentacles have infiltrates UK politics.
