Christmas lights in Wood Green
The other day, HoL was mentioned on Twitter with the following message:
@harringayonline Really disappointed with the Xmas lights in haringey. Enfield and Barnet have made such a lovely effort!
I have to put my hands up and admit that I haven't noticed Haringey's decorations yet - mind too busy on other things? I was wondering what other people thought?
Last year the BBC documented huge cuts in spending on Christmas decorations by many London councils. The biggest cut - in Islington - saw the total spend down from £138,000 in 2010 to £11,700 in 2011.
By coincidence the two highest spending councils last year both border on Haringey - to the south, Hackney spent £165,000; to the north Enfield spent £138,000.
As we reported last year, Haringey bucked the trend in 2011 and notched up the biggest rise in spending, where the the amount used for decorations was up by £41,740, to £66,740.
So, haringey's not being stingy, but the question remains as to whether Haringey appear to have got the budgeting right and whether they're getting value for that expenditure.
