Haringey Council proposals to treble the number of concert days at Finsbury Park with up to 6 concerts lasting 3 days each. The current council policy only allows 5 concert days at the park, the plans would increase the limit to 18 concert days.
The plans will dismay local residents who suffered from anti-social behaviour and noise during the recent Stone Roses concert at the park and anger local park users who will lose access to large parts of the park for much of the summer.
Each weekend concert takes a week to set up and take down, so a 3 day concert closes the south end of Finsbury Park for two weeks. Six concerts could therefore lead to the park being taken over by concert organisers for 12 weeks over the summer.
The plans were discussed on Monday night at St Ann's & Harringay area forum meeting; the consultation on the proposals will start shortly and continue throughout October. The policy will then go to Cabinet for a decision in December.
I have to say I am not happy with the plans. There needs to be more security at nearby pubs and more toilets to cope with the current number of concerts. Local libdems are calling for a full ban on large concerts during the school holidays, so that local families can enjoy full access to the park.
What is also shocking is that Haringey only charged the promoters £130,000 for the Stone Roses concert, that's just over a £1 a head. The promoters only make a relatively small contribution to the police for the cost of policing the event-around £30,000. This is again shocking, such a small amount when our officers could be out in our streets dealing with crime instead.
Its my view that the council need to rethink the plans and concentrate on charging more for fewer concerts. That would increase the amount they make from concerts and decrease the disruption to residents and damage to Finsbury Park.
As mentioned this is going to consultation very soon but I would love to hear what local residents think.

The link to the consultation is now working. Its here:

Looking at consultation this is what I think they saying they want to do:
- increase large events to 6 per year and increase permitted duration of large events to three days
- remove constraint on max number people allowed to attend large events
- remove constraint on the area of the park a large event may use
- increase funfairs/circuses to 4 per year
- remove restriction that surplus money may only be spent on Finsbury Park
- increase to £20k/year fund for "community" activities, but for all Haringey parks not just Finsbury Park
- add event info to the council website and leaflet nearby area when events happen
Is that about it?
I don't know whether I should be shocked by the sum of £130,000. I have literally no idea what the going rate for equivalent venues is. Does anyone here?
I'm happy in principle - I'd welcome more music events locally as others have said. I wonder if there's some merit in having more slightly smaller ones, but I don't know if that's attractive to promoters.
Along with the obvious facilities issues, I'd say it would be helpful if any event site avoids obstructing key walking/cycling routes in the park as much as possible, for those who commute through it.
The disruption caused to other elements in the park should not be forgotten. The Finsbury Park Sports Partnership (Open evening Monday) have just taken on an agreement to lease the track to save it from closure. If there are 18 days of concerts in the Summer what are the impacts for access to our track?
I'm totally against having more concerts in FP, for the same reasons as other people really - mainly reduced access and enjoyment of the part for people who go to a park because they want to be in a park!; damage to the park which never seems to be totally repaired (or can't be, in the case of trees being damanged); and length of time set up/take down takes. I use the park every day and it makes my heart sink when I see all the disruption caused. I have no objection to a small number of concerts a year, it should stay as it is.
Although as usual, they seem to be more interested in whether you have had your gender re-assigned than what you have to say on the actual topic - there was only space to comment on the issue of increasing the numbers of people allowed at each event, and nowhere to comment on increasing the overall number of concerts, apart from to say yes or no.
Haringey’s recent proposal to fill the park with concerts for up to 18 days per summer is ill conceived and asset stripping of the worst kind!
And worse, according to the Friends of Finsbury Park (below) – it appears they have already decided, and the consultation is just a tick box exercise to prove that they consulted the users and locals.
We need all our members (and friends) to reply to this consultation, or risk massive damage to the park - both physical damage and damage from restricted access to large areas of the park.
These large scale concerts will also limit the ability of FPSP to generate revenue from the tennis courts, as the noise and disturbance from concerts will make it very unpleasant/difficult to use the courts.
A park is a open green space to provide respite from the congestion of city life. I completely oppose using parks for large scale commercial concerts – as I cannot see how they satisfy any of the objectives of a park - a park should be a tranquil space free from noise, pollution and congestion, a space to play and exercise. Concerts should be held at venues specifically designed and suited for that purpose – a park is not such a venue. They are not even proposing to put money earned back into the park, unless it gets above a very high threshold, and then the money must be shared with all other parks in Haringey – presumably ones that are not blighted by similar concerts.

Subject: Haringey Council Events Consultation Finsbury Park - Have your say!
Dear Friends,
You may have heard about the Council's plans to increase the number of large scale events in Finsbury Park. We urge you to please complete the consultation (www.haringey.gov.uk/finsburyparkevents) before the deadline on 31 October. But please do read our position below before you do, as it contains important background information.
To enable us to tackle issues like the proposed Events Policy, we need as many members as possible. We are therefore actively growing our membership and you will be hearing from us more often. Please do also follow us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/finsburyparkfriends) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/finsparkfriends) and tell your friends and fellow Park users!
Our position on the proposed Events Policy:
The Friends of Finsbury Park are deeply concerned about Haringey Council's consultation on the event policy and the plans to increase the number of large scale events in Finsbury Park.
What the council say:
What we say:
Further to the above, we know that the council has already received applications from SJM Ltd and Live Nation for three 2-day events between May and July 2014 with 50,000 attendees on each day. We therefore feel that this consultation is already destined to be found to approve the five day policy as well as the revenue target, rather than be a true consultation.
We urge you to tell the council your views and please feel free to ask any further questions for clarification on any of the above.
Thank you!
Lynn
