Haringey Obesity Conference

Anyone know someone attending this event today 25th June 9.30 am - 3:15pm - at the Spurs UTC in Northumberland Park?

I'd have liked to go but only just found out, and booking had to be by 16th June.

Absurdly, a participant in the conference is "Chicken Town" the favoured business getting a large grant to open a fast food business on Tottenham Green.

However there are other speakers.

I'd like to read some independent "reviews" of the day from HoL members. (No Council sock-puppets please.)

Yes, the cycling league sounds great. I hope my kids' school will participate. My point is though that designing streets with active travel in mind would allow those kids and others who aren't motivated by competitive cycling to make more journeys by bike.

I'm not suggesting it's all about the bike, but Dutch kids eat more calories than UK kids but have a lower obesity rate. Half of Dutch primary age kids cycle to school because roads have been designed to make it safe enough for them to do so. The focus in the obesity debate seems to be all about consumption and not expenditure, when inactivity is just as damaging to child health as excessive weight.

I think the intention of CT is a good one, to try to encourage healthier eating, but I fear that it may not prosper. Eating habits and preferences are established early in life, much earlier than the age at which teens visit Chick-shops and much influenced by parents' tastes and cooking. Children might try Chicken Town once ... and then revert.
