It doesn't matter whether or not they are "hardened criminals" - these are people the police want to speak to regarding looting. At this time I think we should be giving the police as much help as we can, not protecting looters

I've asked the Met and they told me that they have film evidence that every person they show on their Flickr page has committed a serious offence during the recent unrest. The images they're showing are the ones that they deem to be the most helpful for facial recognition.
Now, I guess in the first instance it's each person's choice as to whether they believe what I was told and how reposnd to it. It's then down to the courts to judge whether the film evidence is sufficient to convict.

i also have reservations about the tough sentencing brought on by the knee-jerk reaction from our elected representatives, but that is not the police's fault - they are there to gather evidence and submit it to the cps who then decide if there is a case to answer, and it will not deter me from helping the police to capture offenders in the future whatever the crime commited. nor should it you (in my most humble opinion, of course)

We have to trust that, in the normal manner, the courts will demand proof before finding anyone guilty! And also that the police are only circulating pictures of people they have good reason to believe are guilty of something. I trust that none of these people will be sent away for five years just because someone on HOL knew their face......

You seem to be over-reacting a bit here Stephen. All that's being said is that the people who were looting should be punished. Hardly reactionary. What course of action would you recommend be taken with identified looters?

A holiday from HoL? I hope not, Stephen. I value your perspective - even when we disagree!
The other night we heard from some friends about some car burnings in Berlin by young people. I wondered whether this may be a "normal" level of incidents, or whether perhaps there might be some element of 'copycat'.
I've dug out some notes I jotted about Berlin Juvenile Judge Kirsten Hartig. It seemed that a part of her suggested response to gang violence was both restorative justice and where appropriate bringing together victims and criminals. So far there's no English translation of her book. Though, of course, it may not be relevant for us in London.
Although, frankly we should be open to any potentially creative and helpful ideas from anywhere. It's very interesting for example to see that Wouter Vanstiphout has just become a member of HoL. Thanks to whoever linked to the article about his work in the Evening Standard.
I've been looking at some of his video lectures on YouTube which give many more interesting pointers and ideas. Including the observation that an ongoing - if lower - level of disorder may be thought of as "normal" in places such as Paris.
The striking similarities between the Banlieues in Paris and parts of Tottenham was a strong impression I got from meeting Professor Claire Levy-Vroelant when she came to Tottenham about five years ago and presented some of the work they were doing there.

No Alan, this is one where we have to disagree - The Burning of cars in Berlin has nothing, niente, nichts (nüscht), to do with the London riots - and if I may say so, it's mischievous of you and other politicians to make the comparison. That would be an easy cop out for you all wouldn't it?
I'm also was a fan of Kirsten Heisig and her methods... But she stood by and continued to use the law as it currently is to the full.. without any reactionary & vengeful knee jerk new additions.. like taking away social housing etc., etc.,
OK, if you want to compare Tottenham to Paris, then so be it.. but they are so unalike..
