As we hoped you've noticed, we've been running regular Repair Cafés for a while now. We're all unpaid volunteers, helping local people for the love of it - could you be one of us?
We're looking for people to do the range of things needed to welcome people in and help them. In this timelapse (thanks to Sam, the All Good Bookshop manager who took this) you see we're quite busy:
Maybe you could work from home doing some admin, keeping an eye on people who post here on HoL and either replying or asking the right person to do so?
If you have some experience with voluntary orgs, maybe you'd consider being a trustee the best use of your skills and talents? We're community-led, which means the Trustees work for the members, who direct what we do by accepting or modifying our Trustees suggested way forward.
Similarly, are you interested in learning how to apply for grants?
If you can spare the three hours or so at the weekend, maybe that could be as a 'greeter' who looks people up on the list in the back room of the bookshop and directs them to their repairer?
Perhaps you have graphic skills (or want to learn by doing) - we sure could do with more graphics help - pictures speak louder than words. Could you maybe take some photos at the event for us and post them on socials?
We don't expect our repairers to be experts (though some are). We use a 'troubleshooting' approach because it uses skills you've already got - just staying alive nowadays needs lots of problem solving so if you're someone who enjoys figuring things out, could you help others fix their own stuff even if you don't have much 'expertise'?
A huge amount of what we do is to search Youtube for people who've fixed the exact same item before - just pointing that out to a 'bringer' can end in them fixing it at home themselves, or doing it with us. Nobody knows everything - getting to know the repairers means you can ask around and that really works.
Asking someone who has brought in a toaster to check the fuse for example can fix it straight away - you don't need to know how a toaster works to help someone, especially if you show them how to check a fuse themselves, something that could save them grief for years to come.
In other words, come on in the water's lovely! Direct message us here or on Facebook or 'Contact us' via: HaringeyFixers.org
