The Proposed Haringey Loop Cycle Route
Haringey Council is planning the development of a Haringey Loop cycle route, based on an outline proposal by Haringey Cycling Campaign.
Consultants have been commissioned to carry out a feasibility study into the route to review existing conditions, identify options for improving conditions for cycling and make recommendations.
To inform the study they are seeking input from groups and inidividuals with local interests and knowledge. HoL members have been invited to add their input.
A key part of the information gathering element of the study will be a Cycle Route Inspection Meeting. This will to review existing conditions, identify problems and gaps in facilities for cyclists (and where appropriate walkers) and discuss how improvements could be made.
The inspection will take place by bicycle on 1 February 2013, meeting at 10.45am at Wood Green library, for an 11am start.
The ride will run anti-clockwise around the suggested route for the Loop, stopping at Finsbury Park cafe for a lunch break (participants will be liable for their own lunch costs), with an anticipated finish time of around 4pm.
If you would like to attend, you should send confirmation by emailing consultant Mark strong as soon as possible.

I guess the thing to do would be for both Pam and you to submit those suggestions to the organisers?
But what is it for ? A race? - unlikely.
Bits of it are scenic I suppose. But what's the point asking for comments when we don't know what it is ?
Quite. I generally cycle to get somewhere, not to cycle. So it needs to connect with existing provisioned routes, and improve them too.
There's no indication of the form the route would take, either. I hope this isn't just another bunch of signs to be obstructed, and paint on the road to be parked over.
Well, after more than a week, the organiser Mark Strong hasn't replied to question about what it's for so I remain in ignorance. Did anyone go on the run and can throw some light on the purpose of the loop ?
Mark Strong has replied. The purpose of the cycle route is to encourage cycling.
Apologies for getting involved in this discussion at a late stage.
Haringey Cycling Campaign proposed this idea to Haringey Council in 2011 with the purpose of creating a sign-posted circular leisure cycling route, suitable for all ages and abilities taking in as many of our lovely parks as possible. The vast majority of the route will be in parks or on very quiet roads. The route illustrated in the above diagram is not necessarily the final route - the consultants are still working on what they consider to be the best route possible.
Please get back to me if you have any further questions
The route would not work in certain places such as where it crosses the bridge from Station Road into Ally Pally. That bridge is the access to the railway platforms and is far too narrow for shared use and up to 40% at one point, it is hard enough running up it let along cycling. It would be better to carry on up Buckingham Road and then turn left at the roundabout onto South Terrace.
Also Hermitage Road is in such a poor condition due to the number of times it has been dug up and poorly filled in that it is like cycling off road. Add to that the giant speed humps that force you into oncoming traffic and you are asking for an accident. Finally, Parkland Walk is not that great in winter for cycling either.
It is a nice idea though and hopefully something will come of it if it encourages people to cycle more.
There may be a reason it's called Parkland WALK ?
It used to be called the old railway line but I don't see any trains
The end of the Parkland walk, joining the Archway Road, isn't it possible to open the tunnels and have a cut through avoiding the Archway Road Hill, there is also a cut through just beside the Library, another cut through, cutting out any road traffic and having to cycle beside one of the busiest roads in london. Also there is some lovely down hill rides that hardly have much traffic.
The end by Finsbury Park entrance, would suggest dismounting whilst going over the bridge as its quite narrow, having the option to take 3 different routes through Finsbury Park so as not to have too many cyclists going same route through the park. Generally I have faith that cyclists, walkers, joggers, buggies, dogs etc.. can manage themselves to be respectful of each other, the parkland walk is wide enough to pass safely, its not really for cycling fast, years ago we used to have mopeds speeding up and down, glad thats over.
I would rather have the opportunity to look at a more indepth survey of route and sharing with other pedestrians as hopefully more is being invested in making cycling safe in and around the city.
This is an opportunity to make an enviroment worth living and commuting through, developing local networks so cars are not necessary for local activities.
Anyways, please keep me informed and I would be happy to walk through the area at routes and improvements.
