Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The council signed up to the Friends of the Earth Get Serious About CO2 Campaign which sets the target at a 40 per cent reduction because that's the minimum necessary to avert runaway climate change.

Haringey will develop an action plan to guide it through the various measures necessary to meet the yearly targets.

Friends of the Earth (FOE) director, Andy Atkins, visiting Wood Green last week, said the councils new target, '... is spot on'.

Meanwhile up in Scotland a distillery is using algae to cut their CO2 emissions.

The Glenturret Distillery in Perthshire is using oil-producing algae in a bid to reduce its impact upon the environment. Fumes created through whisky production are made into biodiesel by the new system.

A grant from the Shell Springboard award has been used to develop the initiative, which was built by Scottish Bioenergy. David Van Alstyne, chief executive of Scottish Bioenergy, explained that the technology has progressed quickly.

He said: "A couple of years ago the idea of using algae as carbon recycler sounded absurd but with the support of Shell, Edrington Group and the Scottish Environmental Technology Network we have built Britain's first pilot scale bioreactor."
