Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Take an expert 50 minute guided tour of Hornsey Town Hall with Paul and Oonagh of Crouch End Walks.

When the Twentieth Century Society came to visit Hornsey Town Hall, the members agreed it was an amazing building. It won awards when it was first built. These days it's a bit frayed around the edges, but still has all its original features. Hardly used for 15 years it's now opening its doors to the public with a community project, Hornsey Town Hall Arts Centre. This is a fantastic chance to see the hidden treasures of 1930s modernism, and discover the history of Hornsey's iconic HQ and Assembly Room.

If you haven't poked your head inside yet, you can get some idea of what it's like from this set of photos I took back in 2009 whilst it was still mothballed and inaccessible.

Foe we Harringayites, there's an added treat since the centrepiece on the first floor is a part our our history. The war memorial standing there started life on one of the Ladder schools then moved to the old St Pauls Church. After the church burned down the memorial was moved to the town hall.

The tours are starting this weekend and running until August. More about the tours at www.hthartscentre.co.uk

Thanks for the heads up Hugh - must revisit - I was there a couple of months after you at the Open House Weekend in September 2009. Have always wanted to go back. They had a few "staff" on duty at the Open House Weekend...

And did you know all those lovely art deco clocks were synchronised?

Thanks for this, Hugh.

We had eighteen join us on Saturday and their enthusiasm for the detail for the interior of the building is a testament to the inspiration and vision of the architect.

What happens next to the building is uncertain. Tenders are being prepared, and we do not know how much will be spared once development starts.

This could be the public's last chance to see the inside, in all its faded glory.
