Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A nice young man from the Greens knocked on my door (near Black Boy Lane) recently and asked me what issues concerned me as a resident heading up to the Council elections in May.

I was pleasantly surprised as I've never been door-knocked other than in the fortnight before a local election/by-election. I thought 'at least they're asking', noone from Labour has ever asked. Then it occurred to me that, by now, they should know. Their candidate won a seat in the last by-election in April 2025. That was a while ago and I haven't seen or heard anything from him since.

Am I in the minority? What has young Ruairidh done since being elected?

Has he helped resolve any issues for you with the Council or made any tangible improvements in St.Anns?

I'm not suggesting that he hasn't. I just haven't heard of any. Therefore, it would be good to know what experience others have had to help me decide whether to vote for him again.

Rest assured, if he's picked up a crisp packet and put it in a bin or planted a tree somewhere, he will have done more than Labour have ever done in the Ward.

So, how have the Greens performed locally in St. Anns this past year and should we vote for them again?

There are three seats. One now held by the Greens and two still held by Labour.

UPDATED 02 Feb: apologies there are only two seats in St. Anns. One held by Labour and one by the Greens.

Hello, reading with sadness that Ruaridh Paton will not be standing. For reasons I cannot disclose I have much to be grateful for and his involvement and representation on my behalf with the council was critical.

On top of that in all exchanges he was  clearly a person who was  genuine and of high integrity.

Definitely the Greens had good folk choosing to stand, chose their representative well and I hope will do so again for May.

Wishing Ruaridh all the best.

I have had dealing with Ruairidh Paton over the past year. In emailing both the St Annes councillors over a local issue, only Ruairidh responded (many times) and helped me immensely, raising my issue within the council. For that I am very grateful to him and sad that he won't be standing again. The only response I ever got from Labour was after I pointed out to / shamed them that they never responded .

Dear VivY and Leanne,
Your posts are examples of what I summed up on Thursday as councillors' showing: "Kindness in contact with residents and trying to get action on their problems".
I
'm pleased to hear that Ruairidh Paton "helped immensely" with some of the traditional councillor "casework" with residents. Obviously such individual work is harder to  count than turning-up - (perhaps briefly perhaps for a long period) at a Council meeting. It can also vary from place to place. Having done it as a councillor for sixteen years I also know that casework can be emotionally draining.  And a privilege for me to make personal contact with many good people living in my ward.

I don't know about Ruairidh and am not asking you to break confidences. But I did meet councillors who didn't need ticks from the Party whips to make an accurate judgement of their performance in serving  the community.
