Green Party candidates? - Harringay Ward
Anyone know if the Green Party candidates for councillor elections coming up in a little over 2 months time have been announced?

Oh, it's my pleasure, Matt. As a guide to you as to why my comment has a utility beyond what you perceive, it's useful for people who weren't here in 2010 to know that the Green Candidates campaigned here in 2010 then very quickly disappeared....completely. From my perspective, an interest in local issues needs to last a lot longer than for a few weeks around election time.

Hugh, is your guidance entirely fair?
Obviously I hold no brief for the Green Party, but I imagine they might argue that their concerns relate to an area even larger than the ladder roads.
Any Ward candidate needs to have some awareness of issues over the whole Borough and beyond.
However, our particular electoral system means that if any party comes a very close second in every Ward: they lose everywhere. It leads to distortions in Harringay, Haringey, London and the UK.
It's why most Liberal Democrats support a proportional representation electoral system. The electoral system is unfair to several parties: in Haringey, its even unfair to the Conservatives and I was pleased to note that the personal opinion of a Haringey Conservative was in favour of PR.

In Alexandra it's Lucy Craig (formerly Labour, incredibly hard working) Not familiar with other two — Daniel Jones and Gordon Peters.
We have the liar Lib Dems at the moment and I hope they have now broken enough promises for people to see them for what they are. (And I say that as someone who has voted for them in the past. Never again!)
As far as I'm concerned it's a two horse race between Green and Labour, but de-selection nonsense in St Anne's makes me think the Greens are the way to go to keep the bastards honest

Fair question Matt. Until Left Unity put up candidates im voting Green. Ive emailed Haringey Greens to ask what up.

I appreciate your frustration with everything that's gone on locally, Phillip. May I ask, would your vote for Greens be by way of a protest one? Or will you be voting with a sense that what might perhaps be fairly called an opportunist candidate would work hard in the best interests of the neighbourhood?
When I say opportunist candidate, I'm referring to any candidate of any party, who's shown no interest in local issues, nor partaken in activity on behalf of the community until a month or two before the election and then promptly disappears again, the day after the election.
You're much more involved in local politics than me, perhaps I'm missing something important, but with my current level of understanding, I don't believe that opportunist councillor candidates, particularly those who don't live in a ward, are going to be the ones who will attend to the mundane nitty gritty everyday issues that councillors need to.
If I was looking for an alternative, I'd be much more inclined to vote for an independent who's already engaged locally.

The important thing you may be missing Hugh is that the candidates may well come from our local ward AND may have been involved in the local community in various ways since the last election. Don't presume anything until they've declared their candidates ... if they do.

If they are locals who've been involved, then none of what I've said would apply, Matt. My point isn't in any way party political. It applies equally to any opportunist politician from any party.

Its a political question. Maybe a councillor works very hard for local people, but at a national level their party is helping to maintain a status quo which is making local problem worse. e.g. The bedroom tax, house prices being forced up, cuts in LA spending and attacks on public health and education accountability and control. When i have problems with the Council and I get in touch with my local councillor, how they behave DOES affect how I will vote in the next election. So I do take your point, and I would not automatically vote for a 'protest' candidate. Take the case of Lucy Craig in Muswell Hill. When she was associated with right wing Labour policies I was very disappointed in her, as she is much admired. However she turned her back on Labour and I would now vote for her again.
