Govt plan to sell your GP records
Hi,
As a concerned citizen I thought many of you might be interested to learn that the Government is preparing for the "biggest data grab" in the history of the NHS, giving patients little information or warning about the planned transfer of medical records from GP surgeries in England to a central store for research purposes – and with no prospect of the data being deleted.
For me this is shocking behaviour yet apparently there is a way to opt out - but you must hand a physical form to your GP by 23 Jun 2021 - 1 month away. The Govt are making it difficult by insisting on a physical form even though we live in a digital age. More skulduggery. My doctor's surgery knew nothing about this plan or the fact that they were expected to process patient's dissent forms! Madness.

Admittedly this has been handled badly. Yet the value of that data for the NHS and society as a whole is immense - in terms of diagnostics, resource allocation and such a vast range of applications. While I think there is more than a good measure of paranoia in some of the materials shared, I think with good governance this could be a game-changing endeavour, and data is (and will be) one of the more important assets of our and our children's generations. Because it exists it has the potential to be misused so there is no better custodian than the government.

If this really is, as you say, "one of the more important assets of our and our children's generations", then why treat it as if you are selling an old couch on gumtree? Due diligence is required.

In terms of being ignored by the mainstream media. I would say it’s been hard for them to keep up with all the shenanigans of this government. Did you know that GP’s are being sold off to American companies? True.

This is very true - this government are hard to keep up with ;-) Their track record demonstrates the need for oversight and scrutiny. That said, the media are hardly covering themselves in glory by accurately reporting what Govt do and holding them to account.The issues with GPs is frighteningly sad - another area not reported on!

Where does it say that it will not sell it? Govt hasn't got the capacity or skills to handle such a massive tranche of personal sensitive data so it will 'lessen the risk' by letting a private company process it (process is the key term here). Google will soon have all your medical records. (Thinking about it, this is probably safer than the govt, but that's beside the point)

That's no argument. It doesn't say that your medical records won't be published in the Daily Mirror but do you really think they will ? It doesn't say that Private Eye will not report that you suffer from paranoia ?.

It also doesn't mention that the strange little itchy rash you had wont form the basis for an article in the British Medical Journal, so you are safe for now.

Aha, here is the first article in the 'mainstream' media (Metro) that has emerged on this topic.
Many of the points I have flagged in written about here. Let's hope the other media outlets follow suit:
NHS Digital set to share medical records with outside third parties...
"The data will reportedly be available to both academic and commercial third parties for research and planning purposes."
"While the data will supposedly be anonymised, the NHS will hold secret ‘codes’ to unlock the identity of the data’s owners if there is a ‘valid legal reason’"
