Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi All,

We've launched a crowd funding campaign to help us start a painting course in Tottenham. It would be great if you could view our video and read about our campaign below.

WHO ARE WE?

My name is Taslima (locals call me Taz) and I am a resident living in Tottenham. I moved to the area in 2011 and really wanted to meet like-minded people who lived locally. With my background in the arts, I launched Tottenham Art Classes in January 2014 for locals to get together, engage in something creative, affordable and closer to home. We hold drop-in life drawing classes every Thursday evening at arts and music venue Tottenham Chances and at the Beehive Pub on the first Tuesday of every month. We also hold Beginners' Life Drawing courses on Saturdays.

We have four Volunteer Tutors who are on hand with advice and guidance at the drop-in sessions. Tutors have an arts background and are from the local area who use the opportunity to gain professional experience in tutoring adults.

We currently provide some basic easels, drawing boards and materials during class to ensure a quality experience for the students. It's also an opportunity for students to meet other like-minded people, make new friends and feel part of a community.

WHAT DO WE WANT TO DO?

Having held two sell-out Beginners' Life Drawing courses, students are now eager to try a painting course. We would start with an introduction to Life Painting and devise a structured day course with our current Saturday Tutor Edward Wills. Class numbers would be restricted to 15 to allow enough one-to-one tuition throughout the day. We would provide easels, drawing materials and boards, oil paints, brushes and palettes as well as keeping it affordable for the area. We're hoping to hold our first Life Painting course in September/October in a local venue in Tottenham.

WHERE WE NEED HELP?

We decided to use crowd-funding as one of the ways to support getting this course off the ground sooner rather than later (our students are really desperate to get started!). We conducted a questionnaire at three months and it was clear that there's a overwhelming desire for a painting course.

The biggest expense are the easels because you need good, sturdy easels to use for painting. The most suitable easel is called a Radial Easel. We've spent time researching and the cheapest price we've found for this easel is £47.50. We're asking for £1000 to overcome the initial set up costs which include the cost of the easels, materials needed for the course and tuition from a professional artist. Getting all the resources in place, will help us to use for future courses we'd like to develop including still life and landscape painting.

By providing a well-resourced painting course, students will develop their painting skills further as well as being more involved in a creative community activity.

We'd really really love and appreciate anything you're able to pledge towards this campaign and would happily and proudly show your support in any way we can. Feel free to pledge what you want or select from our pledge rewards here: http://www.zequs.com/campaign/painting-course-in-tottenham
