Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Piazza design for Junction of Green Lanes and St Ann's, please comment on a resident proposal to make it a reality! Could this be considered to be adopted by the Green Lanes Strategy Group?

The square / piazza would work as a pedestrian friendly gateway between the two wards of Harringay and St Ann's. Bus routes would continue as normal and traffic direction would be reversed on Harringay Rd, also making catching a bus safer, crossing St Ann's for the 341.

For the Winter Fair everyone will remember how exciting it was to see the band and pyrotechnics open the Festival, Doctor bike has used the corner of the Salisbury for promoting cycling, it is a a landmark that many people recognise locally or otherwise.

For nursery and school children and parents it would make pedestrian access to green Lanes/nearby children's centre and school travel safer, it would improve the shop frontage for immediate St Ann's shops and reconnect St Ann's with Harringay, where local events can be promoted.

Yes Salisbury

Yes, (though it should be noted that as you suggest, the turn off from St Ann's Rd into Salisbury Rd is Hostile and confusing to pedestrians, as drivers don't always indicate) ideally it would be great to reverse the direction of traffic on Salisbury and Warham Rd, (down roads are quieter on the Ladder, no up changing gears.)

amazing how we are ruled by the motor vehicle! and transport,I guess just having to be at crap places (work argh) at certain times. Time and space  oh well the complexity of our modern city living, shame  such a lovely idea hope it comes to fruition. 

I like the looks of it because it seems more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly. Sharing space more fairly puts a little bit of pressure back on the car, where it belongs. Narrowing roads reduces speeds – and accidents.

Yesterday while walking on GLs, one car came along a GL cross-road so fast that it actually managed to scrap its number plate on the foot of the "hill" on the western side (Warham). I and other pedestrians looked on in astonishment at the sheer recklessness of it.

I'm amazed when the Ladders were resurfaced that the dip wasn't resolved on Warham Rd, water pooling there was a problem also. Vehicle undercarriages have always been an issue scraping there, it also damages the road surface, (the marks are clear to see,) clearly drivers do need to anticipate junctions and avoid any need to accelerate dangerously. What time of day was it?, if you got the Reg. it could be reported to the police online, and it will be recorded.

Thanks Sara, if we all talk with our neighbours and generate some interest through HoL then its increasingly possible.

We did without a vehicle in London for 15 years, it's a mind change, a 45 min cycle into Covent Garden for several years,its a great stimulating way to gage the feel of a city.

Nice idea if the issues can be worked through; my understanding of the current set-up is that it allows ambulances from the Tottenham station on St Annes Road to exit onto Green Lanes via the no entry gap outside the Salisbury? How will it fit into the wider Green Lanes improvements?

Surely the Salisbury is the elephant on the Piazza?  All that's needed is a cheerful TrashMob one Sunday morning to demolish it, the Coliseum and adjacent buildings on GL / St Anns Junction, affording public place for all the piazzas, pizzas and plazas we need. That nice HOL man with the nice name can set it up. Demolish it and they will come. 

The Electric Coliseum Cinema building was lovely, as painted by Stuart Free,

(www.stuartfree.com/painting_and_print/show/2)  but was rebuilt as an elephant,

we lost our public meeting hall in the Coliseum long before that redevelopment, when it was allowed to become derelict. The late Matin Hordyk told me it used to be a venue for Socialist and Unionist meetings, you may be able to confirm that, it would be nice to be recorded.

'The Salisbury' satisfied David Cronenberg's eye, discovered by his location manager, Barbara Pullan in 2002, for the film 'Spider,' and Grade II Star Listing confirms It's a long way from being wished to go the way of Slough.

The old coach house on Harringay Rd has fascinated me for years but its character has been obscured by the tyre garage in front, but you could knock it down to create a corner square at a cost of around 4-500K.

If we could resolve the lane at the rear of Grand Parade, (where a shop owner was stabbed not to long ago,) off Harringay Rd, it continues to pose an environmental health issue with dumping and neglect of services, and lack of lighting, then you would be a local hero, in my eyes.

I love it. if there is a realistic way to re-route the traffic, I think it would be fab for the area.

Just to let you know that I raised your idea at Green Lanes Strategy Group tonight as an AOB, and it will be discussed further at the next meeting in October when we are dealing specifically with elements of the Green Lanes streetscape vis-a-vis the OLF2 and TFL funding.  The reaction of most group members to the general idea was positive, the traffic re-routing less so.
