Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Gambling Commission responds to FoI request about research into social effects of FoB-Ts

LAST week the Gambling Commission responded to my Freedom of Information request about any research into the social effects of Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (AKA "FoB-Ts").

I made the request via the WhatDoTheyKnow website and the answer is on this page:

Research on FoBTs

There are perhaps 32 or 36 of these machines in a 500m-long strip along Green Lanes. Often, they are immensely profitable (for the owners):

FoBT profit levels

Considering FoBTs alone, I estimate that a net £30,000 to £35,000 is being sucked out of the local Harringay economy – each week.

Rob thanks for posting the links (the second is for a PDF).

Fixing the law since the last government's Gambling Act will be slow and difficult but its something that must be done. The present government seems largely insensitive to the effect of FOBT addiction on gamblers and their families.

Amongst the social effects of FOBT's I'd be interested to know, is the wider impact e.g. the extent of any relationship with crime, increased policing and anti-social behaviour.
