Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

give yourself a treat and support your local trader!

we only have 2 good French restaurants in Crouch End, on,y one is open at lunchtime, then only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays but you will eat extremely well   I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch last Friday but felt sad for them that there were so few customers and hope they don't change their hours

Names. locations please.

so sorry, John, how silly of me!   the restaurant I refer to is the Aix in Tottenhan Lane

Thanks. Will give it a try

By the way, The Aix is NEVER open on Christmas Day, and they are NEVER fully booked  months in advance for said (non) opening due to popularity. Oh no.

Ha - my thoughts exactly Osbawn! I'd willingly trade the endless Turkish fare in Harringay for a couple of nice French restaurants

Or even an English one  ( Not Wetherspews tyvm )

I would love to hear reviews of Le Bistro if anyone has been recently? I haven't been there since my elderly(sadly now late) father in law took us there for a treat as we had been looking after him. He was a Northern man with old fashioned ways. The manager took exception to his way of dining(he ate quickly and left soon) He berated him for asking for the bill without ordering dessert etc. Haven't been there since, tho it was at least 5 years ago and maybe things have improved...

how appalling!   my daughter is always telling me I eat too quickly but it is nobody's business unless it is offensive to other people   my ex-husband owned restaurants and some customers did behave in an extraordinary manner but the staff were always polite, as they should be to customers, of course

It is some time since I've visited Le Bistro but I will do so soon and report back

I had a similar experience. We went to le bistro once as we were wanting to explore some of the places in the High St. After finishing dessert and asking for the bill we were given the 3rd degree by ( I assume)  the manager as to why we weren't going to stay for drinks in the restaurant. I had to defend to her for several minutes my reasons for wanting to go to the pub rather than in her restaurant.

I am absolutely all for supporting my local businesses, but when I experience  appalling attitudes as I did there then the place doesn't deserve customers.

On the other hand I've always had great food and service at both Les Associes (Park Road) and Bistro Aix

Interesting that you mention Les Associes as I thought it closed down years ago, but it seems not! The last time we were there, the waiter kept topping up my wine glass everytime I had a sip. I was driving, and being very careful not to drink too much. (never drink and drive at all now) I had to ask him not to do so, and he spent the rest of the evening hovering around and smirking. Never been back. Like other people, I would love to see more variety in the Harringay Green Lanes 'Strip' but one thing I love in the Turkish restaurants is that you never get 'attitude' as you do in French ones. The waiters are always there to accommodate you, and you only have to go a few times and they know what you might like. They are happy to serve you with another free Turkish tea as if you had spent a fortune!

I agree with you about Turkish restaurants, Philip. but not about Les Associes   I don't go more than about half a dozen times a year but have always had very good food and service there, including  something enjoyable for my vegetarian daughter   (as you know, theTurks are particularly good at Veggie!)

re Turkish food: may I pop in a recommendation that you see (and preferably buy!) a copy of the Saqi publication Turkish Cookery which is full of recipes and interesting articles by the very best British and Turkish cooks and culinary writers and photographers, edited by Sally Mustoe to raise money for further education for children whose parents were killed in the last earthquake.             afiyet olsen  or bon appetit
