Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi,

I have this TV - Hisense 50 Inch H50B7300UK Smart 4K HDR LED TV

I have absolutely no idea how to set up a Freeview on it - menu comes up but when I select any channels nothing happens, just a grey screen.

Few idiot questions (apologies, laugh all you like but please help if you can)

I live in a conversion, 3 flats, no communal aearial or communal dish and landlord (L&Q) refuses to install one.

So to be able to view ANYTHING, so far I had own satelite dish and Sky subscription despite never really watching Sky.

The plan was get a smart TV and ditch Sky all together and just watch free view and Netflix etc.

Set up Netflix, working fine but for the life of me can not set up Freeview - I looked on the Freeview pages but can not follow at all, menu is different and no idea what to press.

So a stupid question now - do I need to have the Sky box on to watch Freeview? TV ha a build in freeview so I thought I will not need the Sky box with it (idea was to ditch Sky and their crazy prices).

Can I tune Freeview without the Sky box?

Completely confused - can anyone help with some advice?

Thanks

The link you posted above says - " If you watch or record shows as they're being shown on telly in the UK ('live TV'), you need to be covered by a TV licence. You also need one if you use BBC iPlayer ".

The whole situation is a nonsense of course.

You've been claiming that you don't have the equipment to watch live TV.

John, the principal error in your previous post is to state that a licence is needed to watch streamed YV like Netflix or any catchup service bar iPlayer. As Anka's link says, you don't. That's matches my understanding.

The gov.uk page on this has simply:

You must have a TV Licence if you:

  • watch or record programmes on a TV, computer or other device as they’re broadcast
  • download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer – live, catch up or on demand.

Hugh.   I didn't say that  I was careful to say " live " TV and " as they are being shown "

You must have a TV Licence if you:

  • watch or record programmes on a TV, computer or other device as they’re broadcast

I honestly cannot see how the licence fee can continued. As Anka says - how do they know  / prove that you have watched live TV ?

The system relies on the honesty of the viewer and we know what that means :)

"I will not when the sky box is sent back to Sky when my "notice" expires on 14th Feb.

I have it now but I do not watch live TV anyway.

If I get the internal aerial it will be to use freeview not live BBC or BBC player

What exactly is your point?"

Can't reply in-line cos of thread limits. If you get the aerial to watch *any* Freeview channels you need a licence.

You keep saying you don't watch live TV, but that's exactly what Freeview is.

https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one

  • watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV, on any channel
  • watch or stream programmes live on an online TV service (such as ITV Hub, All 4, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Now TV, Sky Go, etc.)
  • download or watch any BBC programmes on iPlayer.

Not sure how you're managing to misinterpret this, particularly the first line.

Ian's comment is true. You watch anything off-air (via an aerial ) you have to pay a licence.

Your initial post asked for advice but you continue to reject it.

What's that got to do with watching live TV via Freeview? It's clearly referring to 'catch-up' services.

This is getting silly.

But on Freeview you are watching it being shown on television. You are not downloading or streaming after broadcast.
