Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Apparently, there is a new free school called Eden opening in Haringey. Does anyone know anything about it? I couldn't find anything on the web.

So “choice” has reared its ugly head again, the curse of modern society! I don’t want to have “choice”, I want access to good standard local services which are as equal to those elsewhere, that have been benchmarked and quality assured by sector specialists, without having to spend most of my life comparing service providers.

Telephone directory enquiries or rail companies anyone – the market will of course always provide the best solution!?!

This I agree with you wholeheartedly. But at least HOL has spluttered back into life again. Mix religion with education, a little politics and free economics and off we go!
Well Julie.you maybe has to discus this in Public!

Why don't the Tottenham Tories put all their efforts into starting up a Tory primary school in the east instead of wasting it on the mirage of political representation. I think this short term view of trying to get elected every four years or so is not getting them anywhere, they need to take the long view and indoctrinate the local future voters. I bet you'd get a LOT more parents "choosing" a Tory education than a Labour one.

Teachers are paid by the taxpayer, Billy Hole. Might be more convenient if we did our jobs for free but so far this hasn't been proposed. 2000 teachers in Haringey are members of the NUT and we have about 100 reps, in almost all schools and units.  Teachers are tired of being called 'usual suspects' by Tories and they don't, by and large want to work in free schools.  Anyway.  Here's your proposed local free school.  I hope Baby Billy Hole enjoys herself and does well:

All teachers are paid by the council.

Well the first thing to level the playing field would be to remove charity status from all “public” schools, I don’t see why they get preferential tax treatment subsidised by all taxpayers – isn’t this the ConLib argument regarding university fees?

The easiest way to square that circle Billy would to be to limit the number of places available to fee paying schools at universities to the percentage of students out of the total population that they teach – democratic as I’m sure you’ll agree? No public money should go to them at all.

Best students going abroad? I'm laughing my head off. Only the wealthy and stupid would be forced abroad.

@Inkjetpack's idea most definitely has merit. Yesterday a work colleague who lives in St Alban's was showing me the website for St Alban's Girls School which is a private school... in St Alban's. They make a point of having a governor from a college in Oxford and one from Cambridge to help your young Violet's Oxbridge entry. This stuff is almost entirely a closed shop full of phone calls and letters to and from the right people. The only people who can play the game are the well connected and the well minted.

Employees in a lot of workplaces are released for union duties. Workers need immediate representation when they're ill, in trouble, under-performing or in dispute. Local reps are vital and an efficient way of doing things.

You say we need to do all we can to prevent public schools becoming the preserve of the rich. Tax breaks for public schools have been in place for more than a hundred years. How would you evaluate the success of this programme?

http://www.russellgroup.ac.uk/Access-and-inclusiveness/ - so percentage wise fee paying schools are over represented for the volume of students that they teach - http://www.isc.co.uk/FactsFigures_PupilNumbers.htm.
