Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

To those who WFH (work from home) due to current situation - how do you find it?

I normally used to work from home 1-2 days per week  which was fine as I set my own schedule which includes some really random hours looking after/supporting staff all over the world (so different time zones/work patterns etc etc) which was often easier done from home than massive open plan office.

For a month now I have been working solely from home, I had to speed up some roll outs to enable everyone else from my organisation to work from home too (not without few hiccups) so 3 weeks of 12 hour days wore me out a bit but things are calming down a bit now and I am getting to the point that I actually miss the office.

That bit of a banter, that going out to grab a coffee, time away from the screen (I seem to be attached to my laptop/phone now) and seeing real people. I work with a fantastic team which helps but still

If you do work from home now - how do you find it?

Sounds like where I work. They already moved a lot of people from one building to another building nearby. Now they are going to move people back from the other building to the old one where there's more space. Then there's going to be building work on the other building to make it more suitable. And then everyone can move back again, along with the other people still at the old building. I'm on a fixed term contract that ends on 31 December so f*** knows what I'll be doing.

I currently work in a building on High Holborn (or would do if we weren't at home). The other building is on The Strand.

Just the same nonsense going on with lots of companies...

Our department used to have weekly Monday meetings. Now we're having meetings on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays via Microsoft Teams. A lot of the time is spent just chatting as if we're hanging out with a tea or coffee in the "breakout" area.

I was in a similar spot - our team moved work areas last week, but before then it was 30 minute "catch up", then one team "stand up" (read: a 1 hour meeting because these fools don't understand the concept of a stand up) a week, then one formal team meeting a fortnight. Plus other obligations in the wider work area. In my 37 hour working week I was losing almost a fifth to Covid specific "catch ups" and "get togethers". So I stopped going. New work area does 15 minute "no work" check ins a day and one formal meeting a month. Much better.

I don't miss the faff of going into the office, but I do miss the people, and I miss Westminster and being part of the ecosystem. I've still been going down for shifts of course, but it's not the same - the sight of my favourite lunch spots and watering holes dark and empty is rather depressing. There are much bigger ills in the world, of course, but it's the little things that get to you.
