In India, the home of vegetarianism, farming is in crisis with 100s of 1000s leaving the farm for urban slums. Thousands of farmers have committed suicide over the last decade as their incomes and way of life has disappeared. The 'green revolution' of the 70s, with pesticides, fertilizers, more intense farming techniques and loans for inputs has left their land exhausted and them bankrupt. Greater use of and competition for ground water has depleted supplies. National agricultural output is down from 20% of GDP to 13%. Population continues to increase, now over the billion mark. Crisis indeed. And this is just one example.
