We had a major problem with maggots then flies a few years ago. Turned out a pigeon had got down our chimney and died right behind one of our fireplaces. Very unpleasant experience. Can't remember who we used though, sorry.

This is really common with dead pigeons in a loft space. It may sound a bit daft but I would suggest making sure there are no holes or gaps in your roof tiles/slates (big enough for small birds to nest in the loft). We occasionally get this in empty properties and the fly's are always big (bluebottle type) and slow flyers. Hopefully a one off by the sounds of it.

By coincidence a big fly arrived at ours yesterday. Hope that doesn't mean we have a dead something somewhere!

I had similar with a dead squirrel in space over my porch a few years ago. i kept spraying and they eventually stopped (when all squrrel meat had gone i assume). Might be expensive to call someone out if it's a temporary problem. Good luck

Flies are just doing their job. Without them we would all be neck-deep in rotting garbage in minutes. Maybe better to let them chomp away on the odd carcass, how else will it disappear? They will move out when there's nothing more to eat.
Or then bring in some spiders?

Don't bring in the spiders. Tempting in the short term, but before long you'll be bringing in birds to catch the spiders; a cat to catch the bird; a dog to catch the cat; a goat to catch the dog. Then a cow, and finally a horse. Just give up and move house.

People might find it useful to know what happened. I kept spraying and hoovering up the corpses. Kept thinking they were all gone and then another would fly past.
First signs of flies was on the Sunday. Worst nights were Tuesday/Wednesday. On Weds I tried a pest control firm, none of them mention prices on their websites.
A very helpful man called the same night (sorry I can't remember his firm he was based in Essex but served north London). He said they were not cluster flies as I am on ground floor they are usually in attics or in houses near fields, also there would be more if they were cluster flies, more like hundreds.
He said they are bluebottles, there is something dead somewhere, under floorboards or in walls, impossible to find source unless bad smell (there wasn't). He said sit it out, could be two weeks and they will go. He said some firms would take my money but he wouldn't as there is nothing you can do.
He was right, the last live ones I saw were the following Saturday (so just under a week in total). Touch wood I have not seen any since. I was not keen on spraying so much fly killer but it did work, they died. Spraying might be more of a problem if you have kids and/or pets.

Well done. It was probably a one off like my dead squirrel. Nice to know there are still honourable tradespeople about.
