Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have been pole-axed by this flu strain, indoors for 7 days now. I HAD a flu jab in early Dec...so much for that. One adult daughter had it before Xmas but then cooked Xmas lunch. One had it the week after. Both went back to work, both relapsed this week, one taken to St Thomas hospital yesterday with serious breathing difficulties(no never had asthma). Home now after 5 nebulizers, and steroids. Told virus related. Quite a few local friends had long bouts of this flu, in one case 8 weeks .. What is going on? Never known it this bad. Yes flu common this time year - but its the strength and ferocity of the bugs going around.
I am at last on mend. Am taking antibiotics which as we all know don't help the virus just prevent secondary bacterial infections.
Just thought I'd check if this affecting a household near you?

I had something that sounds similar. I was pretty much out for the count for a few weeks. It started a couple of weeks before Xmas and I'm just getting over it. First time I've been 'bed-sick' since I was about 10.
sorry to hear you've both been so ill.  Being an asthmatic I usually get a letter/phone call from the doctors to come in and get the flu jab, but this year I've heard nothing.  Has anyone else had the same lack of encouragement?  I had the swine flu jab and the seasonal flu jab Dec 2009 I wonder if they are same strains this year, hence no new jabs?
Told by doc friend that flu jab contains 3 strains inc. Swine flu so don't know what I got. I don't wait for GP to contact me. I just ring up and ask when can come in for it. Nurse gave it this time. Not that it stppped this bout. Any docs out there can explain?

Ruth, I have asthma too, and have not been called in for the flu jab this year either. It's the first time they've NOT called me in. I did have the jab at a pharmacy near work though, and it's free for us wheezy people. Not had flu as such so far, but had about 3 weeks with a really horrible cough.

What Sapphireblue is describing sounds like swine flu to me.

Yes last time I had anything like - was 20 years ago.
Same here, had flu type symptoms beginning of December. Cannot remember having been affected like that for ages. Felt really tired and it lasted for a couple of weeks. Coughing got really bad, so went to see a doctor who gave antibiotics to get rid of 'chest infection'. Doctor almost seemed bored at the time as he said everybody has got it these days. Nurse recommened flu jab for the following week, but I didn't get one. Even if I wanted I couldn't as I still felt bad the week after. So thought she must be joking..
Poor you! Unfortunately, this is the result when we try to fight these diseases with antibiotics on top of more drugs. the Flu gets stronger, we dont... *shrugs*
Me too! Haven't been this ill since I was at school in high mountains and freezing weather in Wales 40 years ago. Just recovering now (Day 6), and certainly trying to get through it without antibiotics. Everyone says "look after it, don't let secondary infections develop", but other than the usual of keeping warm but not too hot, and eating as well as you can and loads of fluids and hot drinks, it seems to me that the secondary infections will come along if they fancy. Radio 4 and, especially, entire works of Mozart on Radio 3 feel the best nurses at present, kind friends bringing shopping plus brief walks round Chestnuts Park in the lovely sunshine we're having from time to time. Can't actually imagine how I would have coped with being this ill during my years of single parenthood if I'd had to look after anyone else at the same time. I'd urge any one of you who know anyone starting this flu to offer to deliver them some shopping now!
Would be interesting to know how many people suffering from 'severe' flu like symptoms also had the flu/swine flu jab?
... or do what I did, if your friends are all at work, or family far away or no one handy ...do your shopping online - very simple - just go through picture shopping lists, book a delivery slot for the next day (if pos) or day after - the man who came brought each bag through to my kitchen for me how kind!  Then get a friend/neighbour to get any small thing that's urgent for the day.  What really worked for me were carton's of fresh soup - no cooking, small appetite, easy and tasty!

Hi everyone, I've also been feeling absolutely terrible for over a week now with a temperature, aching limbs, cough, sneezing etc. I thought it was a bad cold, but am now thinking it might have been 'flu, and I am still not fully better on day 9 or 10.Does that sound like what others have had?

Is there a confirmed outbreak at the moment? I do remember some medically clued-up friends mentioning earlier in the winter that it was going to be a particularly nasty one this year. I'm just wondering if it's ever going to shift at the moment, has that feeling of really not wanting to leave town!
