Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Kebabs are great but wouldn't it be nice to have some more proper fish and chip shops in the area?

I think Toffs is overrated and overpriced. They took over from a superior traditional fish and chip shop and just doubled the price. The original would cook you fresh fish from the slab. But the catch for me is that the chips are mundane. Not fried in beef dripping as they should be. Yes Toff's is ok but for the price you could eat at the best restaurant in Harringay.

Just posted something along the same lines about Toff's earlier in this thread. And I can't really see how George's could be much better.

Yes, George's is good, have been going there for years but it's a struggle getting them home nice and hot now I don't have a car unfortunately.

No mention of value for money?  Size of portions? Quality of fish - and the chips?

Went  to Georges last night on the strength of posts here. Not bad. Was asked if I wanted large fish but chose small which was just as big! Had haddock and cod and large chips. Plenty for two. Good sized fish. Cost £10.70. Fish was good, freshly cooked. Chips were def better than average. Not stunning but will be back. Also can park outside after 6.30! Friendly relaxed service. Take away only.

NB just noted George's DOES have some dining tables FYI . Not posh but quite ok....
Not the one on st Ann's Road.

A bit far for some & not quite in our area but there's one just about surviving in Archway between suicide bridge and the soon-to-be-demolished  wing of Whittington Hospital. Last time I was in, fish was lovely.  I hope the one by  Crouch End clocktower is still open, that was great as well.

I'd like to thank everyone who alerted me to George's which had passed my radar up till now.  I tried it last night and the fish & chips authority in the house was very thankful.  They are the same distance from my house as Priory Fish Bar but yes, their fish and chips is just that much better and, judging by how things were looking on a Saturday evening, they could use the business.  I was also much impressed by the decor - I guess usually when I'm passing that part of Tottenham Lane I am racing to pick something up from Hornsey post depot and have never given it a second glance.

The f&c authority is enjoying the leftovers for lunch today just as much.

The only George's I know is on St Ann's Road.

It is hit and miss but the hits are really good (ie, crispy, crunchy chips - not soggy or soft )

Tottenham Lane is the place I'm talking about - opposite Hornsey Police Station.

I have to disagree about the defunct Crouch End F&C shop though.  I thought it bloody awful - both food and customer service.  And the frequent stench of stale frying oil on the pavement outside.  Good riddance was my first reaction on its closure.
