Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Nearly a third of all London children struggle with literacy at age 11.  The London Literacy Champions project trains volunteers to work with parents and carers to increase their ability to support their children’s reading and communication skills.

The National Literacy Trust who run the scheme say that London Literacy Champions are "active, go-getting members of their community, who enjoy working with and relate to people from all walks of life".

You can be a London Literacy Champion if you are over 18 and have good basic literacy skills. You will need to have experience with young children - not necessarily through training or paid employment (it could for example, be looking after your own children or nieces or nephews).

The project will run until May 2012 and you will be expected to give one morning or afternoon per week, including preparation time, working with families and giving feedback to your local volunteer coordinator.
