Family unfriendly cafe
VERY disappointing attitude today when tried to have a cuppa and some lunch in Moka today.
The cafe was very quiet with maybe 4 people in it at 11.40am. I went in with a friend and our two toddlers (one in a carrier and the other in the buggy). We had to leave because buggies are not allowed in there because it would get sooo busy at lunchtime. I was told Id have to fold the buggy up or basically put it outside in the rain as buggies are not allowed. Sadly its jammed so won't fold so we had no option than to leave. There was plenty of room in the corner by the door for it that wasn't in the way of a seat or a fire hazzard. We were only going to be quick so we could get home to get our kids to nap - so infact we'd have been out before the 'rush' got that bad.
Anyway I won't bother going again now. Have met a friend for brunch in there many a time. People forget that us 'mums' are also normal people and do frequent places on our own with friends to have a good ol breakfast too, so being a bit more civil about things like this helps.
Come on Moka - we were so pleased when you came to our neighbourhood but now I am writing this??
Rant over (and my toddler is asleep too :) )

Worth knowing for those of us who like to work from cafes in peace, though :)
Different businesses will work for different people. Most cafes are overwhelmingly family friendly, so I don't think it's really fair to have a go at Moka for trying a different approach.

It was the rudeness of the staff member that got me the most. There are ways of explaining things.
I appreciate some cafes don't want lots of kids in their cafes.

It is a very small cafe and impossible to navigate with buggies so I can also understand them asking you to leave them outside. Doesn't forgive the rudeness though. They have a baby of their own so I don't imagine they're unsympathetic to the plight of mums and buggies, it's just a practicality. To be honest, it doesn't strike me as the sort of place I'd want to go with children anyway. I've always got hard stares from the permanent laptop/cappuccino brigade and those skull paintings used to scare the Bejeezus of my kids!
I now go when I'm child free and love it. I take the kids to Costa and let them run riot there - no one bats an eyelid and the staff are universally rude so I pay no attention. -

Christ, I'm reminded why I so rarely visit this site. I wasn't being entirely serious.
I can't imagine a more unrelaxing coffee experience than Costa, with or without kids. -

I'm a big fan of Moka - the food is amazing, I'm a regular and it's my favourite place to eat.
It's a shame if you felt someone was rude to you. However, don't let that one incident put you off, I've always found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. You'll be missing out if you don't continue to enjoy their delicious food and coffee!

I think slagging off a fantastic local cafe - that is obviously too small to accommodate unfolded pushchairs - on a public forum is very unfair. Sorry to be a bit uber-HoL and all but also I find Costa staff - no doubt on minimum wage - are generally amazingly smiling and polite.

We are sorry that you felt you had a bad experience today at Moka, and that you felt our staff member was rude to you. We have on going issues with space and buggies and try our best to accommodate, one of the reasons we recently dismantled our bar was to allow more space for buggies to manoeuvre and for extra room for them to be placed ideally folded in the corner. We ask that buggies are ideally folded or put to the side for the safety of our customers and that of your children especially within our lunch period when we are serving hot food and drinks, in addition they can also take up space for potential customers, we are a small independent business who has to make the best use of the seating available. We have discussed the situation with our waitress who explained that she only stated the buggies which couldn't fold would need to go outside if the lunch period became busy, we apologise again if her tone or this comment was misunderstood. We feel it is a little unfair to class us as a "family unfriendly cafe" especially as we ourselves have a child, as do many of our regular customers so we are therefore aware of the problems parents face. If you felt unhappy it would have been nice to approach us directly rather than put such a heading on this forum, we are always happy to discuss any issues in the hope of resolving them. We have worked hard to build a business within our local community and such comments can damage all of those efforts.

Just wondering: has Lynbo tried negotiating the narrow aisles of Lynbo recently with a buggy, folded or in full drawn-bayonets mode?
