Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

At long last the promised pedestrian crossing over Green Lanes just north of Falkland Road, is being installed.

With luck, we won't ever have a repetition of the incident I saw a few years ago, when a man and his child on their way to school were knocked down by a hit-and-run driver.

Many thanks to the Green Lanes Strategy Group and to everyone else who has been pressing for this over the last several years, and special thanks to the more than 500 people who signed our petition in 2009/10.

This success shows that persistence pays.

Now let's get the crossing in Alroy Road!

I live on Fairfax Road and I have always been amazed by the amount of people crossing Green Lanes incredibly dangerously near Falkland Road when out and about. So I am pleased that the crossing has been brought in. I am sure it will be a life saver.

But my experience so far is that while some people are using it, most days when driving past or walking past, there are people only a few metres away still running over the road, dodging buses and cars. Now people actually seem to be moving down the street to cross Green Lanes on the corner of Fairfax Road rather than actually using the nearby crossing.

Is it only me that has noticed this? I have just been amazed because often it makes the traffic even worse now as people are skipping between cars a few metres down the road from the zebra crossing. And I still find it terrifying to see people (often with their children) just walking out around buses, vans and cars and completely ignoring the convenient crossing.

A welcome crossing but it seems to be taking a while for drivers to get used to it...

Used it to cross when walking home with daughter from school on Friday, 6pm and two cars ran the light. One in each direction. The big bloke in front of me was wary enough to avoid being hit by a car heading North and stepped backwards into me. There may have been a vehicle parked close by, blocking the driver-pedestrian eyeline, but I was lucky the bloke was crossing ahead of me I think. The second car was accelerating away from the main junction at Frobisher Road.

Generally (and from a cyclists POV) its a very stop-start road where road users are apt to get frustrated by all the lights, so be careful on foot or wheel.

Thanks very much for the warning, Trevor.

I'll leave a message with the police 101 service in order to alert them to the problem, but the most important thing is that people be on their guard.

Best,

David
