Exhibition: Works of George Shadbolt, Hornsey's earliest photographer

George Shadbolt (1819-1901) was a British writer, editor and photographer who took some of the earliest photographs of Hornsey and Tottenham during the 1850s-60s.

Working from his home, 'Cecile Hous'e, on Crouch Hill, he recorded some of the earliest pictures of the area around Hornsey, Highgate and Tottenham.

During an influential career, he spent seven years editing what would later become the British Journal of Photography and was one of the founders of the Royal Photographic Society, then known as the Photographic Society of London.

After 1864, Shadbolt’s success as a mahogany dealer led to his retiring from photography. One of his sons, Cecil V. S. Shadbolt, is remembered as a contributor to balloon photography.

Bruce Castle is hosting an exhibition of their archive archive of these early prints showing the quiet rural landscapes of what is now Haringey. It is running on the Coleraine Gallery until 1 October.
