End of the line for Archway Gyratory?

A meeting of Islington council was deciding tonight on a £2million investment in Archway neighbourhood. The regeneration money would include shop front improvements, community projects and business support. If approved, the funding will also cover the costs of a feasibility study into the the removal of the Archway gyratory system.

In total, the council plans to set aside:

£500,000 for the improvements at Archway Close and Flowers Mews
£250,000 for the gyratory feasibility study and consultation
£400,000 to improve shop fronts in Archway.
£100,000 for local business initiatives to be run by the Archway To...
£100,000 for business support
£200,000 for Creative Islington's arts initiatives in Archway and £50,000 to fund a 200-seat Community Arts Theatre for the Academy of the Science of Acting and Directing, to help boost Archway's arts scene

Why can't they leave things alone ? Both gyratories work quite well.

I have never encountered any lack of parking in the Retail Park. But if you don't want traffic going round the Gyratory, where do you suggest it goes ? The Gyratory is an efficient way of dealing with through traffic: It's just a big roundabouut after all :-)
