Just had men ringing our doorbell claiming to be dustmen asking for christmas tip...asked them for ID, they said it's in the van which is round the corner and they'd come back later with it.

Same thing in Raleigh Road - guy in high vis jacket rattling bins, knocking on doors and pretending to be a refuse worker - when challenged he said the van was on the way but there is no refuse van in sight!
Just had the same thing (Conway Road), they didn't actually ask for money just wished me a happy new year and said 'we're the bin men' so I just said ok and shut the door. Again a van no where to be seen and our collection was yesterday.
I imagine they were scammers.
Even if they were real they do not deserve a tip since they are quite useless at doing the job they are paid for. I have lost count of the number of times I have had to complain about non collection especially of food and garden waste.
Had they called upon me I would have sent them away with a very frank appraisal!
If they were the dustmen then they would be wearing the Veolia branded high viz jackets and they wear the uniform that's burgundy with a couple of reflective bands around the leg. So if it's someone just wearing a plain high viz jacket then it's certainly a scammer.
