Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all, we've had a spate of drug related issues in our street.

There are often blokes hanging out on the corner of our street and green lanes all hours. And there's a no-man's land lane between the Gardens and Park Road where punters are taken and partake of their crack etc, and all hours often making a bloody racket as well. We suspect punters take prostitutes down there too.

Almost every day this week we've been reporting suspicious activity to 101.  There was some police action yesterday evening that I managed to miss involving a chase presumably of said criminal elements. Residents are really fed-up with prevalence of anti-social behaviour and the lack of decisive police action. How many calls to 101 does it take to get this sorted?

I've spoken to Cllr Schmitz about this and showed him the lane (and incidentally the dumped rubbish that still has not been cleared by the council).

I suppose our next step is to get in touch with the police inspector who controls our area and ask him/her (always seems to be a him!) for an action plan. I lived in Finsbury Park where we had very similar problems in our street and the police launched several initiatives to  deal with the issues we faced. I was very impressed with their willingness to take our complaints seriously and follow though enforcement.

Cllr Schmitz (and Cllr Alexander) are going to investigate what we can do with the no-mans-land lane between Park Lane and Harringay Gardens - we want lighting and CCTV. The council moan they can\t provide this because its private land, yet no owners have so far stepped forward.

Any advice from other folks with similar issues would be appreciated.

the council can find out who is the freeholder of that land and ultimately they are responsible for it and what goes on on it. the council can initiate this action and follow through though you best lite a fire under them. i find they incredibly slow moving beast.

quite a lot of perseverance is required.

i also recommend getting a local counsellor involved. Nilgun Canver is Cabinet Member for the Environment, might be worth a shot.

Have you contacted Safer Neighbourhood Team? They going through loads of changes but part of MET, have found them more proactive than the council.

Bonne courage.
