Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Last week the National Infrastructure Committe published their report on Crossrail 2. Whilst overwhelmingly supportive on the project, they do not seem to support the branch that would serve Haringey. So is that it for us?

Recommendation 4

In developing the business case, it is crucial that TfL and DfT identify clear proposals to maximise its benefits and increase deliverability. The costs of Crossrail 2 are high and therefore every opportunity should be taken to improve its affordability.

  • The updated case should include detailed options to reduce and phase the costs of the scheme. The most promising option identified to enhance affordability would be to delay the construction of the north-western branch to New Southgate. This could reduce the costs of the initial scheme in the 2020s by around £4 billion. More work should also be done on the costs and benefits of individual central London stations.

  • If construction of the north-western branch is delayed, this would also provide the opportunity to consider the case for an eastern branch from Hackney as an alternative.

This has already been picked up in a pre-existing discussion.

I really think that they should hold off on this. There will soon be no reason to tunnel under all those motor vehicles as... they'll disappear. Uber Uber Alles.

I think I understand what you are saying.  Here in Germany, the larger the city, the lower the number of car owners as a percentage of the population. http://www.spiegel.de/auto/aktuell/liste-der-staedte-mit-der-groess... A trend that has been seen for at least the last ten years now. Also the trend for car-sharing schemes continues to rise. At the same time, usage of public transport has risen and continues to rise at an enormous rate. Something that politicians still haven't really come to terms with, but will need to. CR2 is I suppose, an expression of that.

Also, it has been proven that those under 30, no longer see the car as a status symbol. In fact, the number of car owners as a percentage in that age group has drastically reduced and is likely to continue to do so in the future. Über, über Alles (Never forget those two little dots - they are very important!)
