Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We're thinking of getting a dog but both have full time jobs and can't bring dogs to work. What do other dog owners do in this situation? Can dogs be left at home alone?

No. Don't get a dog.

Speaking as someone with a degree in animal behaviour, several years practical working experience in the sector & as a previous dog owner - no, I don't believe they can be left alone full time. Some people employ dog walkers &/or dog sitters & I'm sure you'll probably have owners who feel it works for them. I can understand this arrangement if circumstances in lifestyle change & there's no alternative option but not that it's a good starting point when welcoming a new dog into your life. Have you looked into volunteering for the Cinnamon Trust or volunteering at a rescue centre? I'm in the same boat as you though, would desparately love another dog but our current lifestyle wouldn't work for them.

I love the idea of the Cinnamon Trust but I signed up as a member 18 months ago and still haven't managed to find any dogs in the local area...

Ben, we really wanted a dog years back esp for our kidz but ended up getting a couple of guinea pigs! Our kidz, now teenagers, still love caring for them, although they do need reminding to clean out the cage :) Guinea pigs won't mind you going to work

I was speaking to a Ladder local the other day who told me that his family have a dog-share arrangement with another Ladder family. You still shouldn’t leave it alone for hours on end on a regular basis, but you may be able to work something out that works for dog and both sets of owners. I’m not sure if there are any professional reservations about dog-sharing.

I love the idea of dog sharing! I'm in exactly the same position and would really love a pup but we have to work unfortunately... more people to love the dog and more care and attention lavished on it. Should we get a ladder dog?

Some neighbours recently got a dog, he gets left at home all day and howls and it breaks my heart. It's not fair on the poor dog.

Also, please don't buy a dog, there are so many rescue dogs looking for a loving home.

Trend seems to be to get a dog that fits in tea cup! .... well, almost :)

Also not fair on the neighbours!

We adopted a mature Goldie and she had a great life with us, but she went to work with one of us most days or on the occasional days we couldn't take her she spent the whole day with a dog sitter.

If you are both working full time please don’t get a dog. They need constant stimulation and a decent amount exercise twice a day, and while a mature, happy and well exercised dog will tolerate being left alone for four or five hours every now and again it is no way to raise a happy, well balanced dog.

Have a look at Borrow My Doggy - there are lots of people out there who will let you borrow their pup for a few hours or even a long weekend.

Sod it we'll stick the cat.

Hahaha
