Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Does it ever stop?
It amazes me that in my sixties I can still get some sleazy guy making 'kissy' noises at me in the park because I am riding my bike and wearing a skirt, so my legs are visible. It used to happen so much that, like most women, I learned to ignore or blank it, but now it comes as an unpleasant reminder that to some men I am still just a piece of female flesh. Wonder how old and decrepit I'll have to get before this unpleasant behaviour ceases. (And if anyone says I should be flattered I will scream.)

It’s gross isn’t it. I was riding my bike once when a passenger in a car shouted some comment about my bum. I ignored him, as the traffic moved on, they overtook me again & the man spat at me as they drove past again.

The leering shopdoorwaymen of Green Lanes used to murmer “hey blondie” or “big t*ts” at me as I walked home from the tube, and make the kind of noises you’d make when beckoning a cat. Less so nowadays but I had an about 20-year old chase me down the road the other day asking for my number. I’m in mid 40’s. I tell them to eff off. I know it’s uncouth but it gives me a sense of satisfaction that it’s not the response they expect.

I take advantage of that situation by parking my bike outside their shop. They pay such good attention there's not a chance of my bike being stolen (right?)

To be fair and honest, isn’t it sexual harassment and therefore should be reported to the police to protect all girls and women from verbal abuse and worse?

Yes, that’s what ought to happen. Four times I’ve reported incidents to the police - 3x for exposure (including once when I was with my daughter) & an occasion when a man sat down next to me on the bus & started screaming at me that he was going to stab me in the face. I wasn’t even given a crime number for any of those incidents.

I’m sorry to hear you endured these dreadful experiences and horrified to hear your daughter was with you on one of those occasion. It is truly lamentable that you didn’t get a crime number.
I’d be interested to hear from the police what are the correct procedures for dealing with reported crimes such as these.

The police would advise that if there is an ongoing incident and / or you or another are at risk you should call 999. But even if you are reporting incidents after they have happened, a proper response is still to be expected. Exposure, or threatening to stab somebody, are extremely serious incidents and the police are obliged to treat them as such. So report; if the local police don’t respond within, say, two weeks, contact the Borough Commander. If no response within a week, contact the Mayor’s office.
If people don’t complain, the police are allowed to take the view no one really cares. Don’t let them do it.
