Hi All, Can anyone recommend a reliable and good builder/roofer that could repair a leak in my extension roof and look at some guttering? I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.
We just had a visit today from Richard Sheridan, who was previously recommended on HOL here.
Would definitely recommend him - friendly, reliable, very honest and helpful and, above all, seemed very reasonable. We had a leaking gutter, which turned out was just a loose clip. He fixed it up quickly, checked all our other gutters out, advised us they were all good but cleaned up one anyway and also pointed out that our chimney needed repointing (but in a very helpful way, not at all pushing for work). Funnily enough, he was just off to see someone else who'd also found him on HOL. He'll give you a price before he does any work anyway.
Richard's number is 074 6685 9578 020 8485 7240 (Updated with info given by Richard in May 2014).
Lee Jeffs - 07981 403026. Local man. Good, fast and reasonable.
Has anyone used Richard recently? I've left a couple of messages but no return call.

Hi, I have just used Richard Sheridan. I am so very disappointed. He asked for £570 to change a downpipe. We said OK. He was supposed to come on Monday, but he said that a friend was ill. He came today (Tuesday) at 10.30 and was finished at 2pm. £570 for 3 hours job. Then he wanted to replace a wooden fascia for an extra £400 (we said no).
I would definitely not recommend Richard. I understand we acceptedthe quote, but we are going to query it with him. We are super disappointed.
I hope this helps other people making a decision.
Whilst £570 sounds like a lot to change a downpipe (you don't specify whether Richard replaced the downpipe with plastic or cast iron), I'm astonished that you accepted the quote, presumably paid him and then come on here and write a negative post. What are you exactly super disappointed by?
I am one of Richard's satisfied customers and know that he is a reasonable man. You should have talked to him first before letting your anger out on here.
He only replaced a small part of it in plastic. Indeed, I accepted the quote but I thought it would be at least one full day work. We will ask for a detailed breakdown of labour/material.
We took the quote because we thought it was a "big job". Clearly a job lasting only a few hours is not a "big job". Can we only put in good reviews here? I like reading both good and bad reviews and then make my mind up.
I'm not saying you can't write a bad review - what I am saying is that you have written a negative post before you've discussed your grievances with him. You really ought to discuss any concerns before paying someone.
For comparison sake, Richard repaired my gutters which took less than half an hour, so in his mind, 3.5 hours may indeed be a "big job".
Just to confirm what Nicholas has said, we've also used Richard a few times and found him to be reliable, honest and giving excellent service.
Got to back up Richard here. You do not pay an hourly rate, you pay for the job. I recently accepted a quote for roof maintenance work for £1760. The roofer did the work in a day. I was happy to pay and he also did additional work once he was up there at no extra charge. I don't know how many guys he had up on the roof but I didn't pay him for his time, I paid him for results. Its like the old cartoon in my dentists waiting room. Client: 5 guineas to extract a tooth! why it takes me all day to earn that! Dentist: if sir would like. I can take all day to remove it........
