Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi there,

Spent many an hour viewing the site and picking up loads of great advice. Hopefully someone can help me out with this dilemma!

Went to the car this morning to find a parking ticket on it (we live in Wood Green CPZ). Checked on the permit, and it had run out earlier this week. In the past we have always been sent a reminder, and have sorted out a new permit in plenty of time. This time we received no reminder, and as a result, were unaware that it needed renewing (didn't bother to check the expiry date as we'd always been sent a reminder!)

Speaking to a couple of other residents today, they said the council no longer send out reminders, which I find hard to believe, as the website states that reminders are sent out 5 weeks prior to expiry.

Has anyone had a similar experience??

The website also explains that some people do not receive their reminders, and if this is the case they should contact the borough three weeks before expiry.

Obviously I feel slightly annoyed at receiving this fine and will contest it. Bearing in mind the content of the Haringey website, in which they say they send them out, and some people don't receive them, would it be reasonable to ask for evidence of them sending the reminder?

Of course this reminder could have been 'lost in the post,' but it leaves an unpleasant taste - at a time when many of the council services do a fantastic job, I constantly get the feeling that the parking department are out to get you anyway they can!!

Exactly this happened to me a couple of years ago. I challenged it, and got a reply that they are not obliged to remind me, its my responsibility etc - and they waived the fine, out of the goodness of their hearts. So challenge it, you should win. I reminded them that they had sent me reminders for the past 8 years so I relied on that.

IIRC I sent them a screen grab of the bit of their website that says they send out a reminder 2 weeks before or whatever it was. Was able to confirm I'd not had this as the same happened to my neighbour at the time, he also won a reprieve.

Just thoght I'd give a quick update.

I challenged the PCN as stated above. Received a rejection of the challenge on Tuesday - giving 14 days to pay at the reduced £40 rate. Today I received a 'Notice to Owner'. After phoning parking they admitted messing up and have now cancelled the PCN. It's nice to know the incompetence of the parking department does at least have a positive outcome for some of us!!

I looked this up today on Haringey's website. It currently states as follows:

We send out a renewal reminder letter to existing permit holders five weeks before it runs out. However we recognise that there are some occasions when our renewal letters do not reach their intended destination, therefore if you have not received your renewal letter three weeks before the expiry of your existing resident permit please send an email to permits-vouchers@haringey.gov.uk confirming your name, address, permit expiry date and vehicle registration.

We will confirm by return the information you need to renew your permit.

If the Parking Service undertakes to send reminders, staff answering our phonecalls should know this. But I also accept - and I hope HoL members accept - that residents too have a responsibility to keep tabs on payments which need renewing.

Sorry Alan, just to clarify - the 'mess up' this time they admitted to was sending out the Notice to Owner (which demands immediate full payment of £80) three days after they sent out a challenge rejection which states you have 14 days to pay the reduced rate of £40. In 20 years of living in Haringey I've been fortunate to receive only two parking tickets. The same series of events happened on both occasions and as a result both tickets were cancelled.

Although in their rejection letter, it states that a renewal was sent out, their continued standard of conduct leaves me somewhat in doubt about this.

However, I have learnt my lesson, and put the renewal date on the calendar rather than relying on a reminder!
