Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

On his Neighbourhoods website, Kevin Harris has found a detailed article from Daniel Black about Sustrans' DIY Streets initiative to reduce the impact of motor vehicles and make neighbourhoods more attractive and safer.

He notes that work on home zones ground to a halt 'after a series of pilots demonstrated that they were too expensive' (too expensive for what exactly? you might ask. It's worth pointing out that they were inadequately evaluated, without a half-decent cross-disciplinary cost-benefit analysis)...

It's not that clear what the DIY Streets initiative suggests doing. They seem to want a subscription of £150 pa to impart the details.
Pay zillions to make the road nice and flat then install speed bumps ?
NO, simply don't spend ANY money on roads, let them get pot holed and hey presto ! free traffic calming measures.
The cyclists won't like that :-)
We don't mind. The council are liable for any damages to our bicycles and I would trade 10 stitches and a couple of days off work for some "compensation" any day...
I burst both tyres hitting a pothole last week, and was lucky not to be thrown off.
Bugger.
I think that in order to claim compensation, you have to be able to prove that the council had been made aware of the pothole, and that they had been given adequate time in which to fix it.
Maybe that is why fillthathole.org.uk is so successful.
Why don't you watch where you are going? A pothole is just another hazard to look out for, like a child about to step off a pavement, a lorry turning left, the broken bottles dropped in the gutter by careless binmen/drunks, a car door opening, a pizza delivery moped shooting out of a hidden alley, a jogger jumping off a pavement to overtake other pedestrians. I think of my cycle journeys as like a computer game where all the other players are attempting to kill or injure me but if I arrive unscathed then I have won.
Fantastic. Lars Croft on a bike.

Splatt! Another Pizza moped flattened. Blam-Blam!! Another drunk hits the concrete. Zonk!!! Those kids really shoulda taken more care.

Hey, must be really fun. Where do you collect the power-ups and the bigger weapons? How do you do in the boss level battles with large trucks and what's your high score before they flatten you ?
That's me, it's all that bouncing on a hard saddle over the nasty pot holes that really bends your gender
