Disabled Parking Badge Misuse
Sometimes it seems like everyone's got a disabled parking badge on and around Green Lanes.
There has to be some form of corruption at the council for this to happen?
I can see half a dozen blue badges on any short 5 min walk to the shops, all in top of the range cars.
Surely this is a scam?

Easy enough to check if the badge is genuine. But how do you check the user ?

In this day and age it should be quite easy to do a check. I don’t know why they don’t add a scan and confirm system to the badges themselves that would work like so. On obtaining the badge the holder is given a registration number to use with an app. Every time the badge is to be used the badge holder has to use the app to scan the badge. The app will record the time, location, and confirm the holder is actually present when the badge is being used.
The system could then be connected to the existing traffic warden / DVLA system and the traffic warden could scan a barcode or QR code on the badge to ensure it has been activated. No activation, then the car is towed, parking ticket issued and minimum £1000 fine increasing by £1000 a time for repeat offenders.
This would vastly increase the risk of getting hit hard financially for misuse and certainly make the abusers think twice about using a badge fraudulently.
There would have to be some safety net for badge holders who do not have smartphones or possibly struggle to use the technology, say they could have 5 minutes to make a phone call to activate the badge in use and a system would be needed to ensure this isn’t done fraudulently but a bit of lateral thinking could overcome these caveat challenges.
But of course nothing like this will ever happen, not in this decade and not whilst the government IT chiefs are so far behind the curve and not unless they contract the work out to some of the text to park companies who’s IT systems are spot on and work well, the system we would get would be shoddy and easy to abuse.

My mum had one, the badge is tied to the person, not the car. If my sister drove somewhere to pick her up, she'd park using mum's blue badge, go get her and depart. I'd do likewise.

Firstly, you don't know who is disabled, just by looking at a person. Invisible disabilities could include MS, arthritis, mental health or neurodiverse challenges for example. And secondly, anyone with a disability who receives a car through a scheme such as Motability will have a relatively new car, as 25-year-old bangers are probably not easily adapted to use by a driver with a disability.

As stated before Only the Police can check and remove Blue Badges
Yes they normally work with Local authorities who will remove vehicles
DVLA also remove vehicles. But Only on those unregistered / Taxed
Has anyone spoke to local Home Beat Team ?
As sure they could arrange a walk down effected Streets. In my time We used to Arrange Joint operation when New Beat Officers came into a Area
Best Result was Muswell Hill Shopping area, well over 40 miss used Badges was Collected by Police Less than Five was returned after long appeals
Police also discovered a number of other Motoring issues on the operation

This on the wires. It's tempting to conclude that Mr Yusein was so habituated to not be cghallenged in Haringey, he feels he can get away with misuse anywhere.
Man fined for blue badge misuse in Potters Bar

A Pottters Bar man was fined for misuse of a disabled badge parking permit.
A man has been convicted of misusing a blue badge parking permit, also known as a disabled parking permit, in Potters Bar.
On January 14, Mr Hayrettin Yusein of Green Lanes, Haringey parked his vehicle in a residential permit parking bay on Hill Crest, Potters Bar.
The vehicle was displaying a blue badge, by displaying it in his vehicle Mr Yusein was exempted from displaying a residential parking permit.
Civil enforcement officers from Hertsmere Borough Council were on patrol and noticed the badge and challenged Mr Yusein at the roadside.
Mr Yusein admitted the badge was not his and belonged to a friend who was in Camden Town.
The civil enforcement officers issued a fixed penalty and seized the badge.
An investigation by the Shared Anti-Fraud Service, in partnership with the council, revealed the badge had been reported lost some time ago and Mr Yusein was not entitled to use it.
On Wednesday, Mr Heyrettin Yusein appeared at St Albans Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty at the first opportunity to the wrongful use of a disabled badge contrary to The Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984, Section 117.
The magistrates sentenced Mr Yusein on the same day, he was fined £161, ordered to pay costs totalling £535 and pay a victim surcharge of £32.
Councillor Jean Heywood, portfolio holder for transport, said: “It is a criminal offence for a person to wrongfully use a disabled parking badge. Blue Badge fraud is selfish and unacceptable.
“The blue badge scheme is in place to help those who are unable to walk for long distances park in a convenient location to their destination. Misusing the badge not only is illegal, it’s taking up parking space for people who really need it.
“I’m pleased that these cases have been dealt with and those responsible have been fined.
“They will hopefully act as a deterrent and show those who may be tempted that it’s just not worth the risk.”

Fines do work though where people feel there's a strong chance of being caught and then being fined.
Look at Bus Lanes. They've been so effective that you can often see 'off-duty' bus lanes empty because people don't what to take even the slightest risk.
I think there are few people that wouldn't feel £728 fines, particularly if they're getting them regularly.

Again its seems other Boroughs are more effective
But aware they do Call in Holders of Blue Badges regularly, To confirm correct holders of Blue Badges. Might have been effect by Corvid -19
But sure that words with Local Police Team can get Officers checking Blue Badge Holders on a regular basis . As do see Police walking down High Roads. And it only takes Police minutes to check Badge and holder
Haringey Traffic Wardens are a Contract Service. They loss about 40-50 on cancelled Tickets. Reason they will and do not issue them tickets unless sure its correct
