Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Sometimes it seems like everyone's got a disabled parking badge on and around Green Lanes.

There has to be some form of corruption at the council for this to happen?

I can see half a dozen blue badges on any short 5 min walk to the shops, all in top of the range cars.

Surely this is a scam?

I think we need some general acknowledgement that there are of course genuine holders of blue badges who ought not to be tarred with the same brush as those who use them fraudulently.

You don’t need one you just have to get those fake plates and stick them on over your regular ones. This is apparent if you look at the cars parked at the bottom of the ladder roads most evenings.

Do you report them to the police ?

Disabled Badges are Only Enforced by the Police. They are the only ones that can confirm if Badge is Valid

They did add a picture to Badge, but people complained it offended them. The idea was badge was open to see name and picture

Many years ago when working for Highways Enforcement, We used to run a joint operation with New Officers, around the Borough

The majority checked was seized as original owner had passed away or a Relative of registered own

Also remember when I used to get my feet serviced at Bounds Green Practice. They used to have days where, owners was ask to come in for checks. Used to get real heated when disabled badges was removed. Even ended up with having a Police Mobile Station to deal with the bad offenders

Issue is they do not need vehicle registration on the badge.

I have someone living close to me that has a Badge , which also entitles them not needing to pay for parking. Who plays football. It was got for his disabled mother. But another Son seems to transport Her around these days

Got to be worth discussing issue with Next Community Police Meeting

Used to be on Duty at Spurs matches

Looking out for Miss used Disable Drivers. And Parking issues. Even wore a Full Yellow Jacket. With Haringey Highways Enforcement Officer on back

Saw a Guy park in a Bus Stop and Run off to match

Did a check and found unregistered so had it lifted. Ended up with the Driver being arrest at Car Pound , following car not being returned to them. Badge was Stolen

Following Darrens post. Got to be Worth checking with Council to see if they are still Enforcing miss use. As they seem to pick what Laws and Rules they enforce

i know they say

you should Never work Alone

But wasn't the officer on your back

a heavy Load to carry?

No We worked in Teams, had Radio's and mobile phones

Normally had Police within Calling Distance

But was budget cut, even though the Section covered running costs from Fines paid

I was escort to a partially sighted blind man who had to go for a physical assessment to see if he qualified for a BB. I witnessed quite a few of these 'tests' where the disability was obviously exaggerated or you just knew that the disabled person was never going to use that badge themselves. One such was an obviously old disabled woman who could hardly walk and she wasn't acting. Her son though was very verbal about the distress this ordeal was causing her, which it was. But she was from a culture where the older generation were were cared for by the younger, daughter-in-laws and such. Their role in life was done, it was payback time from her children. She would not be doing the housework or the cooking and would not be going out shopping at all. She was awarded the BB but would never use it herself given her circumstances. Later I bumped into her son one day in Woodgreen, his car parked on double yellow lines, Blue Badge in full view but no sign of his mother. I doubt she left the house after that outing to the assessment centre. She was just used to get the BB which was now being illegally used for the benefits it gives.

Although I'm right behind you in regards to the misuse of the scheme, I strongly object to the phrase you used...

"all in top of the range cars"

Can you explain what you mean by this? I'm assuming you think to qualify for a blue badge you must be below some fiscal measurement, or it's casual politics of envy / class war thinking.

What (s)he means, I think, is blue badges appear disproportionately in Mercs and BMWs, usually boy-racer specs.

So how can you tell if a car is parked abusing a blue badge ?
