'DfT's Salt Cell approach comes under fire' 07 January 2010

Quote:

The Government's move to centrally manage the supply of salt to councils ‘will not work’, it has been claimed, in a row over the complacency of some authorities. A senior local government source has accused the Department for Transport of failing to get a grip on the national situation.

He told LocalGov.co.uk the DfT was afraid of being too forceful with suppliers and questioned how much influence the department had over the private firms.

The 'Salt Cell' – which is comprised of the Cabinet Office Civil Contingencies Secretariat, DfT, Department for Communities and Local Government, Highways Agency and the Local Government Association – was first implemented last February and received heavy criticism from councils that had made adequate preparations as they saw replenishments of salt diverted to other authorities.

* Separately, it has just been announced on BBC NEWS that there is no representative on the 'Salt Cell' for London Authorities. Borris has asked that this change ASAP!

* Also, TfL only has enough salt to last until Sunday.

* BBC London Weather is forecasting more snow (possibly heavy) for Sunday/Monday.
